Curtis Mayfield (born today in 1942) was a soulful singer with a social conscience. Twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with The Impressions & as a solo performer), he penned “People Get Ready” in the mid-1960s. His “Freddie’s Dead” & “Superfly” were top 10 pop hits. He died in 1999.
