I helped build a government AI system. DOGE fired me, rolled the AI out to the whole agency, and implied the AI can do my job and the jobs of the others they've fired.

It can't. But, what DOGE accidentally revealed about themselves in the process is fascinating. 🧵

This is the same thing Congress has long done to GSA: block them from spending billions in revenue they’ve generated, and then complain that their services aren’t good enough.
The CR, unless it’s changed, will block the District of Columbia from spending about $1 billion of its locally raised revenue (from local taxes, fees, etc.), forcing sweeping cuts for a city that had passed a balanced budget www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
Entire D.C. government urges GOP to reverse course on ‘devastating’ $1B cuts
The mayor and D.C. Council warned that the city would have to find over $1 billion in immediate, across-the-board cuts impacting every area of D.C. government if the bill passes.

@alt18f.bsky.social saved taxpayers billions, modernized digital services, and made government work better. 💡Now, DOGE has shut it down—eliminating projects that served voters, refugees, military personnel, and more. Read about 18F’s impact ⬇️

This is a very good and useful news story. It reports on DOGE’s understanding that people hate them and what they’re planning to fix it.

It notes, in detail, that what they say they are doing (streamline/improving gov’t tech) was already being done by 18F, a gov agency they blithely destroyed.

Just like 18F, the people behind @altusds.bsky.social partnered with government agencies to deliver critical services for the American people: finding baby formula during a shortage, applying for financial aid, getting veterans’ benefits. They shared our story on their website, We the Builders.

My coworkers and I were fired for being "a coven of transgenders and queers"

Same reasoning used during McCarthyism's Lavender Scare: the assumption that queer people cannot be nonpartisan civil servants as the law requires. We are criminal by definition.

The mass firing of federal tech workers at 18F is one of DOGE's most overtly political acts yet
The federal digital services team 18F had a diverse workforce and openly inclusive policies. That's why DOGE killed it.

You can now read about projects that were interrupted when 18F was disbanded.

One of them was with the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), which ensures military service members and Americans overseas are able to vote, and that their votes are counted.

You should know that a big part of 18F's work was to make sure multi-million to multi-*hundreds*-of-millions dollar contracts at fed *and* state level didn't go to shitty enterprise IT consultancies that *repeatedly* delivered tech that didn't work, was late, or didn't even do what it needed to

I believe Musk and DOGE disbanded 18F because we stood in the way of their "procurement capture" operation. We get the government *out* of wasteful contracts. Musk wants that money back for himself.

The administration got rid of 18F under the cover of night. People who own skyscrapers are afraid of 100 people who make websites.

Not because of the latest tech fad, but because we proved the government can be fixed, the government can be made better and the government can work for the people.

Getting the De-risking Guide 2.0 through and published was one of the highlights of my time at 18F @team18f.bsky.social. My team was amazing and dedicated to making technology procurement in government not only more efficient but effective!!
The work that I led at 18F I naturally feel was really important (I hope all 18Fers felt the same way about their work): codifying the procurement principals that we’d all identified there over the years. I thought this would have a tiny audience. Instead it became a foundational text.

18F was doing exactly the type of work that DOGE claims to want – yet we were eliminated shortly after midnight. Read our letter to the American people:
