ChatGPT’s signature writing style is everywhere now, and I hate it. It reminds me of when we tried mixing all the beverages at the soda fountain in middle school. We didn’t actually create the perfect drink, we just made a cloying monstrosity that lost everything good about its constituent parts.

Really enjoyed this latest @volts.wtf episode with @kingsmillbond.bsky.social, especially the analogy of energy storage technology being like granaries:

"Imagine global agriculture if you couldn’t store grain, you just had to eat it out of the fields." (1/2)

Clean electrification is inevitable
Kingsmill Bond explains why the global march of "electrotech" has moved beyond the reach of US political interference.

Just learned about the `418 I'm a teapot` HTTP status response code and it made my day 😆

Started a fun #gamedev side project: I'm making a web-based version of #sokoban with #svelte, #typescript and #css. Got basic graphics, animations and controls working and just finished the improved version of a solver. It currently solves 90% of the 154 Microban levels in under 10 secs. #wip

Box of rocks! Er ... box of sand, I guess.

I love thermal storage. Such an underrated workhorse of decarbonization.

My latest newsletter is about how tech companies, by pushing generative AI, reveal the contempt they hold for their users and society at large.

Today's #javascript learning: Do NOT use Array.fill() with non-primitive types like arrays or objects. They are created only once and will be shared between the array entries.

This can be hard to spot, because the empty arrays will look the same (i.e. `[ [], [] ]` will look like `[ [], [] ]`).

@edzitron.com You should see this... It seems like all those $$$ spent on Cursor and other "vibe coding" tools don't actually make developers more productive (but make them think they are). The perfect punchline to the enshittification story 😂
metr.org METR @metr.org · Jul 10
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Oh, wow. I had a hunch #LLMs don't actually make devs more productive, but this is ... pretty damning.

And (as pointed out by others) it doesn't even account for the time required to fix all the vibe-coded bugs later on.

I wrote a few words on #battery #energy storage systems and the role of sodium-ion batteries. They are an interesting hedge against future lithium shortages, but the big Chinese players will continue to dominate the global market.

Sodium-Ion Batteries Won’t Free Us From Chinese Market Dominance — KlaasNotFound
Western policy makers and investors have recurring hopes that non-lithium battery chemistries might free us from Chinese dominance in the global battery market. I don't think that's likely to happen.

I spent a few weeks looking into Terraform Industries, a fascinating #cleantech #startup that aims to produce synthetic natural gas from "sunlight and air". While the idea is compelling, I don't think their business case adds up. Long blog post here: klaasnotfound.com/2025/06/03/t...

Terraform Industries says it will produce synthetic natural gas at competitive prices within the next decade. I doubt that is possible.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good, open source client (Mac app or local web app) for crossposting to #bluesky ?

I am currently giving github.com/Linus2punkt0/blu... a shot, but something with a GUI would be nice.
