MLK was even being cheered on by “elites” when he was taking on racist sheriffs in Alabama, but when he began organizing worker’s strikes & criticizing Capitalism and its widespread systemic inequality, he was labeled for being too dangerous, & he even wound up a political martyr

Also, although we plan for play and are tweaking continuous provision regularly, the best quality play I observe usually doesn’t come from anything I’d set up, but from children being forever creative. We need to place more trust in the children.

One year I spent months working on the fears and dislike of math because a previous teacher had used woksheets witj my kindy class and the result was a dislike or fear of math because the worksheets were inaccessible and boring. By the end I could see a love of math but so much damage to undo.

"The teacher must be interested in the child’s affect and motivation, even if cognitive researchers typically pay only scant attention to such factors. It does not require research to know that at any age some children do not pay attention, are not interested,>>

Using MakeDo cardboard saws and screwdrivers and screws to make a car. Student led inquiry about tech and engineering. Students voted to make a car from a variety of plans created by students. STEM, literacy, vocabulary, math, cooperative learning, turn taking, etc.

For centrist elites, it's called a "policy disagreement."

For the working class and marginalized communities, it's a matter of life or death.

Do not normalize extremists.

Reflecting on #NCTE24 w poetry. Thx to educators who connected & reminded me that truth is noticed & appreciated. Truth isn’t easy. Truth requires radical imagination. Truth is love & as bell hooks reminds “choosing to love is a way to move towards freedom & liberate ourselves & others.”

That’s right. Being an outstanding classroom teacher is frequently undervalued. People who choose to prioritise developing this expertise are too often by-passed. And find themselves being told ‘how’ to do out by people who’ve never really done it. Such expertise should be deployed, not ignored.

One of the things which has struck me about the interviews @Sam_LGibbs and I have been doing for our book has been that many of the 100+ teachers we've interviewed, who've served 20+ years are career teachers...a thread 🧵

Adults are so s ared of the word and concept of play because they do not understand it's power for learning. The research is clear. Play IS learning. Time for educators to learn about play.
There's been a lot of talk about play recently in the #EarlyYears community especially given the @ofstednews.bsky.social quote that children's "hands and bodies are active, but their minds are not". Firstly, this is very obviously a misunderstanding of how play works based on poor observation. 🧵⬇️

Haven't figured out to thread posts here yet. This is the 2nd of two posts about Micah's Big Question. Soooo after listening to my students' responses, we read a lot of books and had lots of dialogue. After 6 months: "Dark people also have power like light people." This is why I teach. It matters.

I read the book Micah's Big Question" (and he asks a very big question here) and listened to my students' responses to the question. 10 beautiiful brown and Black kids said "White/light" was the best colour in the beginning of the year. All I did was pose the question from the book and listen.

Like about close to a million of you, I'm brand new to this app. Couldn't get an invite in the beginning so was delayed in joining. I'm an early years educator, a chair at my school, and develop anti-oppresssion training for the staff (hit me up with things you've used). Greetings.
