Perspective: I was an Air Force captain. I was a decent captain, but still - a captain. If someone had approached me to say "when you make major you will be eligible to be the Secretary of Defense!" I would have laughed and rolled my eyes. But here we are.

For my non-librarian followers, I can't overstate the value of the Institute of Museum & Library Services, a tiny federal agency that punches way above its weight and supports many services we take for granted.
🚨NEW🚨: Donald Trump is attempting to strip away federal support for libraries. We will NOT let that happen.

Last night the President signed an order to gut the Institute of Museum & Library Services. But together, we know we can show up & defeat it.

To my mind, the government largely “shut down” on January 20. The rest, as they say, is commentary.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general.

If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

Happy Lunar New Year! I baked these almond cookies for church coffee hour to celebrate. A fun bake, and they were yummy. Recipe from King Arthur Baking Company.

2025 is the year I call out ageism. The comments on this post -underscore how important that is. I also appreciate the podcaster - @caseynewton.bsky.social perhaps? - who recently observed the use of "white" to hide discrimination, as in "old white lady."

Discrimination based on someone's age is so ingrained in society that most of us don't notice it. Yet it affects us all and fighting it not only helps make a better society, it also helps us live longer, healthier lives.

We are having rack of lamb, homemade-from-scratch green bean casserole, stuffing from the artisanal employee-owned grocery store (it's really good), cranberry sauce, and a wee pumpkin pie made in a half-size plate. Recipe by way of Joanne Chang and Rose Levy Beranbaum.

The usual suspects are out there yelling "There are 23 million government workers! Fire most of them!" No awareness that most work for local governments, and most of *them* are schoolteachers. Federal employment hasn't grown since the 1950s

One of my new-found skills is when I'm with other seniors and they begin rhapsodizing about print media, I say "I need the digital versions so I can increase the fonts," and that short-circuits the lengthy explanation of how superior paper is and how they love the smell and feel of books etc.
