Maybe we need to find him a girlfriend.” Nao couldn’t take it anymore. He buried his face in the mane of Aito’s horse, stifling his laughter. His stomach was hurting from holding it in.  “Aw shit! Naoki! Please don’t tell Jiyū what we just said!” Aito cried, noticing the sobbing laughter coming from his left.  “I will!” said Nao. He lifted his head to wipe his tears. “Disrespecting your elders like that… Poor Jiyū is probably out there somewhere, sneezing up a gale.” Tōya groaned. “Now you’ve done it, Ai… we’ll get our necks wrung by the guy once we get back from this job.” “Hey! You pitched in as well!” “Only because you started it!” “Fuck you! Naoki, let me ride with you. I’m sick of this guy.” Nao gave the two a side-long glance before he increased his pace.  Tōya burst out into laughter while Aito spluttered from behind, “Hey! Don’t run off!”

“So, your hometown is in the south too, is it?” asked Itsuki. They were half-way through taking a trail down through the Kouseki Range, a long strip of mountainous terrain that acted almost as a border between what was considered ‘north’ and ‘south’. Nao had made this trip many times, so much so he could probably do it with his eyes closed if he wanted. Though it had been forever ago he’d done it with another person—he couldn’t just slug it out as he usually did, in which he typically tried to cross the entire trail in about a week with minimal rest. Itsuki would probably collapse within the first three days from exhaustion. So, they had to take it slow—at their current rate, they might get to the next major city in about three weeks time. The trail was incredibly rural and not easy to trek. Typically merchants and nobles would go around the range—either by water or crossing through the central plains of Ryūsen. At this time of year, though, such routes were pretty crowded with people taking advantage of the more travel-appropriate weather. “Yeah,” said Nao. Itsuki smiled. “I’ve heard the winters can be quite severe down here. Is that the case for your home, too?” Nao swiped away a bead of sweat running down his cheek. “I guess?” In all honesty, he couldn’t remember what the winters of his childhood were like. Nor did his ‘home’ even exist anymore. The village he grew up in ceased to be centuries ago. “I’ve never had a reason to travel so far south before, so I’ve never experienced anything more than just the mild winters of Tsunashima.” Tsunashima was a town along the central-west coastline. “I can already feel the shift in climate…”
