Finally a form of techno-optimism I can get behind.
a little bit obsessed with the zipper upgrade, and also with the fact that YKK's founding principle is the "cycle of goodness." can I please live in a country where companies believe in the cycle of goodness
The Zipper Is Getting Its First Major Upgrade in 100 Years
By stripping away the fabric tape that’s held zippers together for a hundred years, Japanese clothing giant YKK is designing the future of seamless clothing.

Excited to share this new piece, out today in the inaugural issue of ContraSTS, about the dubious Vesuvius Challenge competition, where participants supposedly used AI to unroll charred scrolls from a buried Herculaneum villa. Basically my position statement on AI.

Disturbing new tactics in San Francisco, but this is a community victory.
Last night, federal immigration officials sent text messages instructing immigrants to appear at an unmarked ICE office at 478 Tehama Street this weekend — an unusual move outside standard weekday operations.

In response, hundreds of community members gathered at 7 a.m. to protest.

It’s so plainly and obviously righteous to resist mass deportations with force that I think the people who want to convince us to be more afraid of the protestors than of ICE must imagine their audiences to be very stupid.
The feds kidnapping and trafficking people is a violent crime. Protesting it is fighting back against abuses of power. The government claiming protestors started the violence is DARVO—Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It’s what abusers do when they face consequences.
