Round about town today: Leaves stuck fast to pattern-imprinted concrete. Teslas double parked outside the aesthetics clinic. A big fat woodpigeon drinking from a deluged pot-hole

One of the best pieces of flash fiction I've ever read - and just left lying in the road.

I think my colleague, Jeff’s theory that the Bay City Rollers and the Wurzels were the Blur and Oasis of the 1970s has a lot to commend it

My great-grandad was a piano tuner from Huddersfield. He was conscripted into the army during the First World War, and had an awful time. After I found out a bit about what he went through, I wrote a short story. I thought today might be a good day to share it. richarddsmyth.com/2025/11/09/n...
New short story: ‘FP Number Two’
The sky shivers with fever and there are devils on the roofs of the public houses.

The wooden skeleton permanently affixed to a neighbour's side gate is wearing its crocheted poppy again. No "lest we forget" sash and beret this year though, which is disappointing

Nice to get home from work and find the latest from Colin Sackett and @uniformbooks.bsky.social waiting for me. Another absolute beauty by the looks. Putting the kettle on.

A favourite from the BBC archive. Fyfe Robertson interviews Huddersfield Thunderstorm gurus Mr and Mrs Morris and Edith Bower. @ofmooseandmen.bsky.social and I featured Morris and Edith in the first episode of our podcast The Last King of Elmet back in February.

I love people who know how to get stains out of clothes. Not dry cleaners, that’s their job, I mean the woman who tears across the street and kicks the door in to tell you that you need to soak an ink stain with hand sanitiser before washing it on a low heat. Those people have seen some shit.

I listen to this while jogging, which is dangerous at my age. The vexing political flim-flam they expose pushes me into heart attack territory, but then they say something very funny, which, fortunately, triggers spontaneous laughter, stimulating my chest, which has the effect of a defibrillator.

My Halloween contribution. Boniface family reunion c.1944. My grandma is on the back row and the baby (bloke) she’s holding is my dad. Nobody knows who the mysterious spectre in the window is.

PS this is a straight-up honest undoctored photo which is a bit disconcerting tbh
