I wanted to try out the BlueSky API, so I created @library-bot.bsky.social

Follow that to see posts of random libraries around the world. For now, it will post once every 6 hours.

I think someone making this chart Googled this at 8:32am and probably thought - too late to change it now…

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

“It's amazing how pollution has dropped in #Paris in 15 years. @annehidalgo.bsky.social has filled the city with bike-lanes & not only has she reduced pollution by 40% but she’s also been re-elected.”

Trading car space for green space, bike space, kid space…trading pollution for people. Good trade.
Es alucinante cómo ha bajado la contaminación en París en 15 años. Anne Hidalgo lo ha llenado todo de carriles bici y no sólo ha reducido la contaminación en un 40%, sino que ha sido reelegida.

I love this math problem, "Moving sofa problem": What's the largest shape that can fit through a 90-degree turn in a unit-width hallway?

A new proof may have solved it after nearly 60 years. (arxiv.org/abs/2411.19826)

Climate change just gets worse & worse as temps go up. Drawing the line at *any* particular temp would be arbitrary. The reason it was done is that policymakers need something firm to work backward from, to gauge & measure their efforts. The political economy needs some kind of anchor.

I don’t read Spanish well enough to prefer it over English for reading most books. But for this one, I think I need to do Spanish. Great pictures too.
