Professor, student, poet, indie author, too busy for my own good
Asked my students to reflect, using Makiguchi's framework of value creation. One student responded:
"If you can find enjoyment in something, learn from it, and then use it to make some part of life better, that's a valuable approach, no matter what subject you’re dealing with."

I got my tickle-me-wiggly out of his
Naughty isolation bag, showed my loved ones
How little I’ll spend on Black Friday.

Trying to remember why I still use Facebook when Bluesky exists.

A dollar-store notebook, barely held together by binding, accepts my daily offering gratefully. It never expected these rhymes, this curlicued poetry. Rather short, jotted notes, grocery lists - ripped pages - mere moments instead of the contemplation of sages. Yet the pen it meets is just as cheap.

Pope Francis busted his holy ass,
Migraine morphing into a hell of a good morning,
Ravens in bloom over his grave.

When you fart and sneeze at the same time, the whole world goes white for a moment.

Today I learned the term "dink" isn't as innocuous as I thought. I've always used it to mean "double income, no kids" but of course it has another more inappropriate meaning (probably multiple).

Today, I asked my students why they should incorporate opposing viewpoints into their argumentative essays. One responded: "So you don't look like you have your head up your ass."

Our Free Country (a BlueSky poem):
To prevent drunk texts, my phone now only
Opens if I can pass a breathalyzer. On top of that

Which Leaders to Hate (a BlueSky poem):
Loopholes in the law still allow
Trans youth to exist alongside the
Salad, sausage, and salsa you so heavily salt.

For a Reason (a bluesky poem):
If no judge can overrule the president,
More trans patients will find themselves with depressive symptoms,
Overcoming near-death experiences.

"Public investment" vs "Wasteful Subsidy." The only problem with this clever Singer cartoon is that some people might actually not get that it’s sarcastically illustrating the incorrect perception problem, NOT telling the truth.

Just in case it actually needs to be said, the truth is the opposite.

What Weakness Really Looks Like (a Bluesky poem)

The Holy Royal Cardinal with a 3-foot vertical leap
Greets us on this eve,
Proving patience is no longer a virtue.

We Are Here (A Bluesky Poem)

In here, we need help,
Anything gained from experience,
Anything at home, not spending money,
Wondering if the darkest roast will be dark as our souls.

What can we do? Do not pre-emptively obey. Follow the law, but don't exceed it. Defend academic freedom consistently. Stick together. Get involved. Educate. Fight in the courts. Expand community outreach.

Free speech and academic freedom aren't about trying to silence views you don't agree with. It's about listening to multiple, conflicting viewpoints and giving everyone a voice in the conversation.

DEI is deemed "illegal" without defining what it is. There's a reason they never call it "diversity, equity, and inclusion" and that they never mention "accessibility." Which of these things are you really against?
