Indie devs that want to do either of these systems looks, please learn this! I promise your end result will be a lot more rad than just turning off texture AA and using some shader you downloaded next to modern rendering techniques
PSX: - Varying resolutions, usually 240p (on occasion 480p, good luck getting 60 fps) - textures can go up to 256x256 (one page in vram) - 16-bit color, 24-bit is possible but very impractical - gpu is glorified 2d monster, triangle vertices snap noticeably to pixels due to no sub-pixel precision, no perspective correction for textures and vertex colors (fun fact, n64 has no correction for colors too) - can use vertex colors to brighten/darken textures -triangles must be software-sorted, but coprocessor helps with math a ton (geometry transformation engine) - 4 blend modes which are all pretty good, full black in a texture is never drawn, can be used for transparent bits (ps1 does this better than n46 imo (screenshot of Vagrant Story showing how Ashley Riot's ears use the black transparency) N64: -Also usually 240p, 480i is possible but destroys performance without some recently discovered tricks (interlaced rendering) -very low texture resolution due to a small "cache", amount of colors diminishes with higher ones, tricks required for best results - cutdown bilinear filtering, sub-pixel precision drawing, post processing anti aliasing in 1996, very limited two-stage shaders with quirks like color wrapping on too bright/too dark results - same screen color depth as ps1 (will also store info for anti alias) -z buffer for per pixel depth, has own problems like overdraw penalties, the hell that is alpha blending (you can us alpha as AA info tho!) -a dedither filter that tries to reconstruct 24 bit color, works best with the unique dithering option the n64 has, will look a tad blurry (screenshot of Sin and Punishment noting greyscale can afford higher number of shades)
