As a Manchester United fan, it’s gonna sound weird… but I’m really hoping City win today.

Someone has to keep Arsenal from winning the title. In these trying times, we need to come together, and save the world from Arteta’s smugness. Sunderland did their duty yesterday 🫡

Always try to score 😕 #MUFC
A. Don’t count on later opportunities.
B. Even a blocked shot can rebound to another opportunity.
C. Don’t base your strategy on never conceding.

The only thing for certain in front of the net is that the team who doesn’t keep creating chances and trying will not score.

Dickens (pre-Christmas Carol / any big success), sitting for a portrait painted by a fellow activist in the 19th-century fight against child poverty, artist Margaret Gillie. Her story ❤️

The lost portrait of Charles Dickens
Margaret Gillies’s portrait of Dickens was missing for more than 150 years, until it turned up far from home. Lucinda Hawksley tells the story of this long-forgotten artist.

Since the new iOS, is the iPhone slower to unlock? Other latency issues seem improved. But unlocking… idk. Seems slowed down.

I started a new job today (first one outside academia) and I completely lost track of the transfer market mayhem. These millionaire sports people’s last-minute, literally 11th-hour negotiations and document write-ups throws me back to academia and school papers.

Can’t wait to catch up!

Doing research for fun, I stumbled on this transcription of accounts the Senate published of witnesses to the attempted shooting of the king, Louis-Philippe, around Christmas in 1836. It's such a rich resource, featuring testimonies from different classes of Parisians!

Party A: I want £70.
Party B: I’ll pay £25.

[party A drops their price to £60.]

Reporters: The parties found a “happy medium” at £40.

Me: No they didn’t! Party A got fleeced. Sort your maths out.

Postscript: Manchester United suck at financial planning and their negotiators suck at negotiating.

WTF? This is Grimsby. Grimsby!! We spent all that money this summer. We (the fans) have given Amorim so much leeway and grace. I still believe in him… But WTF? The first 2 of this season’s 38 games were bad results, but we push through it. We found hope in the performances. But this? It’s Grimsby!!

So excited for the new #EPL SEASON 2025-2026!

My #FPL Midwestern Wanderers are here! Both we and #MUFC are both gonna bring it 🏆

Also, with everything going on, I love that the biggest question on my mind for the next few days: Bruno or Mbeumo? Love football.

Cynthia Erivo came to Cleveland Orchestra’s summer home, Blossom, to perform mostly pop, jazz, and a few Broadway tunes arranged for orchestra to a crowd of 20k. There was no Wicked, which I think is sad for all the little girls who came out (dressed up). But she sang the hell out of Feeling Good.

At the Museu de Lisboa, I learned the Portuguese crown located their capital to Rio de Janeiro (1807-1821).

It’s the 1st European capital outside Europe!

French 🇫🇷 & Spanish 🇪🇸 forces were advancing. So, with English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿support, the royal court quickly packed up their ships and crossed the Atlantic.

The thing about sports fandom is that you have no control and it matters as much as you let it matter in your world, which is kinda true for a lot of non-sports things.

This is a good thing. This kind of disappointment is good. It’s part of what makes winning fun. Also true for a lot of things.

There are 2 finals today: Wimbledon men’s singles 🎾 and the new “Club” World Cup ⚽️

One’s a prestigious tournament showcasing the sport’s peak performers, the 1st and 2nd best in the world.

The other is a fake match-up between the 4th best team in England’s league versus the best in Europe, PSG
