Every so often houses come up in the Edinburgh property listings for a charming-sounding place called "Mount Alvernia". This development was once a monastery, but it had no monks; it was home to nuns. Twice the Catholic Church tried to displace these Sisters by legal means and twice it failed 🧵▶️

I mentioned the Portobello open-air pool in a brief thread at the weekend, so inevitably I invested *way* too much time this week on exhaustively researching the history of this amazing attraction so that you too can join me on a thread about it. I mean who doesn't love an "Art Deco" lido?
🏊‍♂️🧵▶️
"Enormous" queues for buses and trams to Silverknowes, Cramond and Portobello were reported as people escaped the heat of the city for the coast. Over the weekend, the Portobello open air pool had 14,610 visitors and took in £377 10s 9d at the turnstiles - although this was not a record.

There's a thread on AskReddit asking, "People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened?"

99% of the answers are depressing American stories about medical bills, 1% is an Australian who found a wombat burrowing under their house.

Five years today, the statue of Edward Colston was pulled down in Bristol.

Boris Johnson accused protestors of trying to "photoshop" the past and "lie about our history".

I'm reposting below a thread I wrote at the time: on history, memory, and how we decide who to celebrate in our public spaces.🧵

In 2022, a competition was launched for designs for an Edinburgh statue of maternal health pioneer Elsie Inglis - and then suddenly cancelled when a male sculptor was announced.

Now his plans have been unveiled and the row reignited…
