I really enjoy being part of this network - a supportive atmosphere and nice mix of research interests.

Always fascinating to hear from Emma Tennent about the politics of naming behind these important interactions. Here she focuses on naming violence, and in the past we've both discussed the conceptual problems behind naming "barriers" to reporting domestic abuse. #LboroCADay24
Emma Tennent presenting on a very crucial topic globally: describing family violence in calls to police. How can we unpack these descriptions?

Really enjoying dipping into #LboroCADay24 between teaching today. FOMO, as always with virtual attendance (especially when cakes are involved!). Now, Ann Weatherall is taking us through some lovely data from charity shop encounters to show the interplay of transactional and social talk.

December is relentless, so it was hard to drag myself away from the laptop this Weds for our staff-student meet-up at Bristol Christmas Market. But! It was a brilliant evening of silliness and non-academic chat (albeit with a smattering of schwa-related humour 👀)... Exactly what the doctor ordered 🧘‍♀️

How many more language degree programmes will be axed? Even with AI, or especially with AI, we need linguists. How many single or combined major language degrees are still being taught at UK universities? Monolingualism is detrimental to society.

For anyone interested in social justice, inequality, migration, and how language comes into play, this is a must follow.
500 followers on Bluesky! What a lovely round number 😍

Even if it's a far cry from the 24k followers we had on Twitter ... still bitter about how the whim of one dude completely enshittified that platform 😢

Hey #EMCA and #ConversationalAI folk, I’m doing an online talk tomorrow in which I’ll discuss the intersection of these two things (for healthcare conversations).
Sorry it’s short notice, but all welcome!
