Brilliant DLD diagnostic network today hearing from Jackie Moxon, Speech and Language Therapist and parent of a young man with DLD. Lots of amazing nuggets.

🧵The problem with removing labels (in any context), is that as soon as they go, there is no common language amongst professionals, across schools and other agencies.

Everyone starts talking at cross purposes and misunderstanding each other. Everything becomes muddled and confused.

Reading comprehension intervention for DLD. Three groups: text comprehension, oral language and both. All had an impact.
One year later oral language group died the biggest effect.

Strategies for reading in secondary.
Reading for enjoyment.
Need to keep motivation for decoding, think of games as well as morphology.
And for those with language needs, focus on language such as narrative and vocabulary.

DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) is all about spoken language. Words and sentences are tricky for people with DLD. And people don’t grow out of it.

Fantastic. This is just what we need.

Could you also do one on language difficulties? Especially Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) which affects 7% of children (2 in every classroom).

Low awareness means that people with DLD have to constantly explain what DLD is. #DLDday is on 17th Oct
