The cosmic web. This is what the universe looks like on very large scales. The individual galaxies are very exaggerated in size. But this serves to illustrate the filamentery nature of the cosmos.
The universe on the largest scales looks like this. The filaments are made up. Of galaxies and galaxy clusters. The large empty regions between them, called voids, are almost devoid of matter.
