Oh yeah it was at a startup nearly a decade ago and this was already lore by the time I started. The CEO who did this was already gone but I did get Hank Scorpio vibes from him.
I actually bring this up in the article: don’t do this! This is like a Hank Scorpio move. They’re a chair that work for some people but if you force a chair like this on workers they WILL hate you.
I worked at an office where all the chairs were these and while I didn't mind them, I think most of the office hated them but since they were also so expensive, my company required doctors notes if someone wanted a different chair.
