What do 12 billion card transactions say about house prices and consumption?

Using de-identified data on debit card payments and e-invoices for the near population of Norway, we study how housing wealth changes affect household spending. We focus on the 2014 oil-price collapse that created regional variation in house prices through differential exposure to the oil sector.
November 11, 2025 at 7:22 PM
Comparing public workers in oil vs non-oil regions, we find the three-year marginal propensity to spend is 3.6%. The granular data enable us to show the consumption response is concentrated in home improvement, furnishings, and vehicles, and driven by a reduction in credit backed by home-equity.
November 11, 2025 at 7:22 PM
The share of the spending response accruing to locally produced goods and services stands for 80% of the consumption decline. Collateral & wealth effects are key channels linking housing wealth to consumption; household balance-sheet heterogeneity is quantitatively important for the propagation.

Excited to share our latest research on VoxEU! Together with @claudenbach.bsky.social, @kasperroszbach.bsky.social and #talinasondershaus, we explore how 'Buy Now, Pay Later' (BNPL) services improve credit access and risk assessments in consumer banking.
'Buy now, pay later' services have the potential to enhance #credit access, improve #lending decisions, and promote financial inclusion for underserved consumers.

In a new paper, @claudenbach.bsky.social, @elinmolin.bsky.social, #talinasondershaus and I show that Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) isn’t just changing how people shop—it has spillovers to mainstream bank lending because of proprietary data BNPL lenders hold.

Buy Now Pay (Less) Later: Leveraging Private BNPL Data in Consumer Banking

Users of BNPL are more likely to get approved for traditional bank loans, enjoy lower interest rates, and display better repayment behavior. Banks benefit too, using BNPL data to assess risk more accurately and price discriminate.

So while BNPL has been shown to be associated with high coats for some users, it also helps expand credit access and promote financial inclusion. #BNPL #Fintech #Credit
