A year ago, I spent weeks (and plenty of tears) learning how to make my first choropleth map for an absenteeism brief with @fchriscurran.bsky.social. One year and one move later, I built the Georgia version in an afternoon.
Excited to share the upcoming brief on absenteeism in GA soon!

Unquestionably the most dangerous and corrupt attack on the independence of US economic data in American history. Trump is firing the head of the BLS, a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate, simply because the job numbers came in below his expectations today

We find states varied in whether they said they full adopted the NGSS standards or adopted standards based on NGSS - with political party predicting this difference.

Though the standards may not differ much in content, adopting standards "based on" NGSS, rather than full adoption, may give states cover to avoid political push back to common standards.

National standards like the Common Core are controversial. Interestingly, the Next Generation Science Standards have avoided much of this controversy. Katharine Harris-Walls and I examine the correlates of states adopting NGSS to explore why.

A timely and important brief! Also check out the stata map that caused me immense anxiety and took me WAY too long to make.
New @UF_EdPolicy research brief out this week examining chronic absenteeism trends in Florida and variation across school districts and schools. Chronic absenteeism rates state-wide have increased since before the pandemic, but there are some promising signs.
Roll Call: Unpacking Chronic Absenteeism in Florida
Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of school days, has significant negative consequences on academic performance and long-term student success. In Florida, chronic absenteeism rates…

There are no school IDs in the public-use HSLS. But sure, let’s do education research without knowing which students attend the same school.
Research with restricted-use data is more precise, powerful, and relevant. Faculty and staff will be working through the weekend to answer important research questions before we no longer can. This is not normal, necessary, or efficient.
AERA has just learned that all restricted-use NCES data licenses will be cancelled, possibly as early as March 20. We urgently request that all AERA members and others in the research community with restricted-use licenses take these two actions: www.aera.net/Research-Pol...

Most of these datasets are public w small subset of vars restricted
One strategy is to write the paper around the unrestricted vars, referring to the restricted findings that are in an appendix. Submit only that appendix for review
This ain’t perfect, asking for ideas
