In Nazi Germany, this dynamic was called “working toward the Fuehrer.” Not waiting for Hitler’s direct orders, they took the initiative to enact what they thought he would want.
“The loyalists around Trump are much more open and much bolder in their authoritarianism than they were six months ago," says Steve Levitsky. "They’ve learned fight by fight that they can get away with it."

Trump's accomplices are running wild. Examples below:

As you watch the extraordinary spectacle of Trump's government attempting to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda, let's not lose sight of just how lawless and indefensible Trump's misconduct has been all throughout.

Here's a thread recapping all of it. 1/

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

Three U.S. citizens, ages 2, 4 and 7, swiftly deported from Louisiana
The cases have renewed concerns that the Trump administration’s expedited deportations are violating the rights of both citizens and noncitizens.

Reminders:

"Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific.

Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens.

Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant.

Never again is now.

A week ago, the Trump administration laid off thousands of people at HHS and its agencies.

The cuts were so deep, and touched so much, we're still learning about the impacts.

Here are a couple stories that have stood out to me.

Unique pain research office eliminated in HHS purge
Pain is the most costly chronic health problem in the U.S. In latest RIFs at NIH, an entire division devoted to pain research was closed down.

I really do think we’re well beyond this point.

If you pretend that your differences with friends and coworkers and family are about “politics” when in fact they’re about right versus wrong and fascism versus the rule of law, you’re doing your country a grave disservice.
