Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

Visiting a loved one at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center means navigating a series of obstacles like long drives through the Mojave Desert, hours-long waits, and then facing the emotional toll of leaving your loved one behind after the visit is over.

The facility, roughly 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles, is at the end of a road splintered with cracks and potholes. Once there, some wait for hours to see their loved ones.

You should absolutely subscribe to Sean's LA Ten Four newsletter if you already haven't. This is what I mean by indie journalists doing such vital work. A heartbreaking, brutal read.
NEW for the Ten Four:

The Adelanto ICE Processing Center and its conditions inside are the subject of dozens of concerning stories, but rarely is there an opportunity to actually talk to those inside the facility. I was able to get inside (kind of).

Please, support your local indies and freelance journalists. Subscribe to their newsletters, share their work, and, if you can, help them survive. So many are consistently doing incredible, vital work and get paid scraps or less.
But most of the freelance/independent reporters I know (myself included) are either facing homelessness directly in the face, have been homeless or are already homeless. Most work 50+ hours a week.

Support the outlets, but also support your local indies.

Well, yeah, we're suing ICE.

This wasn't really a hard decision. As little faith as we have in institutions, we recognize the value of drawing visible lines in the sand. We drew ours personally a while ago, but better late than never.

May every protester be freed and may this occupation end.
