Excited to see a new publication on Spiny mice (Acomys), investigating their motor neuron pools in the hind limb. They say it's great for understanding development, but it's even better for regeneration studies.

Distribution of the motoneuronal pools controlling the hindlimb muscles in the lumbar spinal cord of the Acomys cahirinus - Brain Structure and Function
The motoneuron pools innervating major functionally distinct hindlimb muscles were mapped in the spinal cord of Acomys cahirinus using the fluorescent retrograde tracer Fast Blue. The dorsoventral, me...

Barn Owls evolved in the Late Miocene (5-11 million years ago) while barns can only be dated back the the earliest granary from 9500 BCE
bug fact: grashoppers already existed at least 100 million years before the first grass

Do you know how damning the evidence in that Congressional Ethics Cmte. report has to be for Matt greedy grabbing grasping Gaetz to remove his name from consideration for the most powerful position he'd likely EVER see in his Life?

That report needs to be a) made public and b) acted upon, like NOW.

The blueback trout (Salvelinus alpinus oquassa), a rare jewel from the Maine woods. In the mid 1870s, they were thought to be competed out by introduced Atlantic Salmon and smelt. William Converse Kendall predicted they would be in other northern Maine waters in 1914, and they were found in 1948.

The pattern of clockwise ocean currents in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere can be explained by the westerly winds blowing W to E at 40°N and 40°S and the trade winds blowing from E to W just north and south of the equator.

Thankfully, video of the operation, complete with 1950's science narrator voice-over, is available at this link, so you can watch the PARABEAVERS in all their Technicolor glory:

I was rereading Tinbergen's "On aims and methods of Ethology" this morning and was awakened by this: "It seems to me that...we...will always need naturalists and observers as well as experimenters; we must...not discourage the [person] with a gift for observation."

I have the gift for observation.

The black bellied whistling duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) is biparental with both sexes incubating the eggs and caring for the young. There are many records of unattended egg dumps and of up to 65 eggs in a single hole.
