While my uLtiMaTe deSigN CoUrSe is cooking, I do have some practical advice already.
I quickly responded to the question on Hacker News and realized if I had to break it down to a two-word answer it would be:
Be passionate.

Feed list: "Pin to home" to get a feed from that type of user. Example: if you're into poker, use a list of professional players.
Moderation list: A list of users for muting. Subscribe to see less politics, etc

My preferred dev stack is minimalism.
Modern web standards, a small handful of decades old unix tools, a text editor, and first principles get me surprisingly far.
Less layers, less to break, less to reason with.
Defer adding libraries/tools until encountering real world problems.
