Her friend zeroed in on the woman across the bay. “No tail this time. No wings, no tentacles, no gills, no third eye. Not a levitating ball of interconnecting polyps. That leaves nine other possible species.”
Trust Raisa to have already memorized major traits of the fifteen species registered in the Calling. She giggled. “You’re going to be the ambassador for Humans, out of the two of us. That much is clear.”
Raisa shrugged. “Knowledge is power, all librarians know that.”

As they wrapped up the ancient story, the yptà dove in synchronicity to the ocean floor. They circled a sacred spot: this was where the Drazoen had first set foot on Quiltac, and it was from here the Tøtimzahler would ascend. Yemoja felt her heart start to quicken, but forced it back to a more sedate rhythm. She would be under water a while longer and a faster pulse led to a greater need for breath she couldn’t access.

The nawa’s voices rose above the hushed crowd. Côttru, Côttru, Côttru Five Come home to your people Return, return, return to us We yearn to see you again Côttru, Côttru, Côttru Five Paul jumped when everyone around him started walking. “We circle the Bath,” she said in a low voice. “Just follow.” Moving so many Jadoube in concert took long kaalas, and they would do it five times. Each circuit they paused, looked to Dalchin as the nawa repeated the song, then slowly ambled around again. She sailed so quickly, their adored moon, and by the time the fifth circle was completed, she hung directly overhead.

“I don’t know who I am anymore. Are we even jo Bikajo, now that the Kawakona is found?” Vailillia jo Bikajo, Lia to her newest friends – Humans! – frowned. Orihei’s questions were bold, shooting straight to the heart of things. Just like her oldest friend: direct and germane. Two sals past they’d picked up Lia’s brother, his Kawakona and the Kawakona’s companion from Earth. In the mad rush to get to Bay, Katy and Raisa, then to protect them from a Pu'ulqaari assassin and make their mad flight to Centris, Lia hadn’t stopped to consider the ramifications. What Katy Phelan, Kawakona of Sundancer Orange, meant to not only the whole of the Aoni, but for their lives on the Eternidad. Orihei now voiced what the one hundred and eighty seekers left would wonder themselves. Were they done? Did they return home, a place of which they’d all dreamed and not one had seen with their own eyes. Hunanjanno jo Bikajo had tasked them with uncovering the Kawakona, the beings meant to bring the Drazoen back into the Aoni. Windweaver, unfortunately, hadn’t said if their job ended when one surfaced, or if they were meant to seek all nine heralds before claiming victory. Furthermore, did the requirement include the newly found Kawakona waking her Drazoen, or was it sufficient to have just located Katy? Skeptical people would certainly argue that the Kawakona was only a “possible” herald until she performed her foretold duty. Yet more would say until all Nine returned, they must journey on.

Lanu looked at the Chitan, nodded, and waved her toward the safehouse. “Fumi Ly you are welcomed. In the wake of today’s events we may have to lock down, but you will be safe.”
Fumi tilted her head, shrugged and walked away. No look or last word back in their direction. She approached Yfaun, narrowed her gaze, and brushed against his shoulder. Not aggressive, but definitely testing. In sixty seconds, Fumi had ignored Bay and Katy, insulted Raisa, demanded a place at the refuge and poked at an assassin. Katy could only dream of being that badass.

She was so lost in her ruminations that she almost didn’t notice Willem, hovering outside the gaol with a pleased expression on his face. Fion slowed down just long enough to make eye contact, then silently scolded herself for accidentally making him believe he cared about her opinion. “I told you he was a person of low character,” he said, falling into step beside her.

He was fine, this would all be fine. He could be a cool friend, no problem. A friend who’d heard Yuhwa moan so decadently the richest chocolate in the world would be jealous, but yeah, totally casual. Instead of Friend of Sister, Paul transitioned to Friend with Benefits. FOS to FWB. Previous FWB, not to be repeated, regardless of how well they’d connected. Excellent, he thought as he drifted back into dreamland. I’ve got this under control.

My stories are non-linear, so this #WIPSnips goes back in time, before the events of book 1, when Swailu takes her journey to Centris to become a speaker for her people in the Calling (a UN for the universe).

Adena jo Kalda, long admired from afar, would now be her daily compatriot and had called Swailu personally to congratulate her. She had painted landscapes with her words, speaking of the curving paths between gardens and thoroughfares, buildings on three levels that were unique and themed to their spokes. Everything constructed in a style that respected the natural world and encouraged harmony with it. No mean feat for something that wasn’t a true planet, but had been designed and created by the Drazoen, back when They still soared the Aoni. How long would it take for her to learn every nook on Centris? Part of her self-measured success would be how well she came to know her new home and its people. Before she could claim expertise, she would need to investigate every level, all establishments. It would take aiwaks, and she would spend that time happily on the Wheel.

Yemoja slowly inhaled, filling her lungs as little as possible, held the breath, then exhaled. A longer pause, before starting again, feeling her heart rate slowing as the cycle repeated. Tschuele learned young to prepare physically and mentally for diving. The ceremony she was about to commence lasted for thirty kaalas, most of which happened underwater. She’d need to be focused, relaxed, and well-oxygenated. Sunrise had teased the horizon for half a sal-ang, but at last the first slivers of true light broke over the oceans of Quiltac. That was their signal. A horn sounded, low and piercing, cutting through morning mist. Thousands of observers managed to keep their excitement hushed enough not to distract. Only when the single note died out did Yemoja dive.

Paul knew all these things they’d heard from Katy were supposedly real, but honestly? All the people of the Universe were long-lived, specially powered, and smart enough to discover other advanced species because dragons made them that way? He’d need more proof to believe it. Newly resolved to avoid the temptation of the majio pilot wiggling her hips like a Latin ballroom dancer, he tried looking through the windows again. Big mistake. A long way away, but closing in fast, was a black hole. How did he know? It was huge, blacker than any black he’d ever seen, and he could only “see” it because the damn thing was sucking down light like a slushy dripping from the edges of a bulging sphere. At least, that’s what his mind told him milliseconds before taking a break and shutting off.

New WIP - a Paɬaˑč (paw-law-tch) is a massive festival held every 300 years, and the greatest makers, artisans, suppliers, and wheeler-dealers of the Universe are coming together on the water homeworld of Yemoja's people, the Tschuele.

Milenyos of history and ritual dictated how the yptà moved. Their group kept pace, floating higher and higher, exhaling as they went, until they broke into open air, gulping huge breaths. Yemoja let the ceremony’s euphoria flood her, grinning and shouting with joy. Their cries were echoed a hundredfold by the crowds, thrilled, knowing the Paɬaˑč would begin in earnest. Many sal-angs later, dried off and walking the temporary platforms to check they floated as expected, Yemoja smiled to herself. This Paɬaˑč would be the greatest of all time, better than any that had come before. Something told her there was extra luck to be found in this gathering, provided she was canny and willing to take a risk.

Yuhwa is a majio - a special pilot capable of traveling through black holes (veșu). Her species (Jadoube) use something called the dao to do it, and here she's trying to describe what it's like.

Sinking deeper into the comfort of the bed, Yuhwa’s eyes closed. Her focus circled like a whirlpool, draining down to her deepest, darkest places. The smallest particles, even smaller, down, down, until she squeezed between the tiniest bits. Each time she communed with the dao this way was a revelation, no matter how many times she’d done it. Shrinking to sub-atomic and quantum levels only to discover how vast the spaces were between infinitesimal things. The wonder of the Aoni surely lay in how universe upon universe nested within itself, an endlessly blooming lotus, that which gave and gave of itself. Yuhwa had never reached an end to it, even on her longest transit. If she dove deeper, more was revealed, unfolding like waves upon a shore.

His hair was a masterpiece, she had to admit. Peroxide blonde, shaved on each side, long mohawk platted down the center and gathered into a bun at the base of his neck. Beads and trinkets woven into the braid. This was Viking going raiding hair. Dude who might snowboard his way down a mountain after being dropped out of a helicopter hair. Pure bad boy you will regret in the morning but thoroughly enjoy tonight hair. 
That face, though… Her first glimpse of his unmasked face reinforced the jaguar or leopard impression she’d first had. Most of his skin was the green she’d glimpsed at Pike Place, but smoother than a Human’s would be. It seemed hard, like it was a carapace or mask rather than his actual face. Maybe this guy wore multiple masks to hide his identity? The vibrant lily pad facial color was broken up by finely drawn dusty pink lines. They were scattered over his entire face in feline rosette patterns. Kind of pinkish cheetah markings. His entire face was covered to the hairline. The flesh under his hair was a sun-bleached ivory.
His overall look was deeply, deeply unsettling. Despite a color palette that should have been ridiculous and off-putting, he was scary. You looked at him and thought of running away because your primeval hindbrain screamed DANGER.

Subbing punching for clobber, and this is a truly horrible moment for Paul. He was an Olympic hopeful, teaches kids gymnastics, and this happens as Humans panic about aliens 😱

He’d been sprawled sideways on the ground while the man assaulted him. Mofo kept punching at him, scratching, trying to hurt Ma. Paul got some good swings in; knew he’d tagged him at least once when he saw blood spurt from the git’s nose. But Paul was sort of turtled, on his side and trying to help Ma stand up while taking blows. When the bastard’s foot connected with his left kneecap he felt pain so intense he thought he’d vomit. When someone fell on top of his attacker, they collapsed on Paul’s already injured leg. Both assholes rolled off, punching each other. Paul knew he needed to move, take advantage of the distraction and get Ma away, but couldn’t move. Paul looked down at his lower body and part of his mind completely dissociated from the agony. Stay in sport of any kind long enough and you’ll see the gamut of injuries. Above his left knee, his femur looked straight, but below the knee his tibia hung slightly to the right of where it should connect. The skin wasn’t broken, but human anatomy didn’t go that way. Never do gymnastics again.
