“Then we should-”, he sat up so fast he almost collided with Yuhwa. “Hey! I understand what you’re saying. The bugs are working!” He pumped a fist; the nearby Mikanjo narrowed their eyes and scuttled backwards. One of them called out, “This,” he copied Paul’s gesture, “it means good or bad? Do you say you will hit and do violence?” Crap. Humans were going to have to watch themselves, if something so simple to him wasn’t clear to his hosts. There was a whole world of Human gestures that were innocent, and probably even more that weren’t. Body language was a new frontier when it wasn’t merely a cultural divide, but one of biology and speciation.

Katy's first close-up with a member of the Rixat species. 🐠
Kalim pinned Katy with his gaze as he stepped closer. He was possibly the most attention-grabbing alien Katy had met so far. He had skin white as a polar bear, that shimmered faintly in the room’s light. His face was angular, patches of flesh replaced with iridescent scales that glittered, sea glass green edged by a darker kelp shade. The scales traced over part of his jaw, left eyelid and right under-eye, streaked his cheekbones and marked a widow’s peak. Instead of eyebrows and lashes he had fine, small fins in a shade complementary to the scales. His green lips were textured, like superfine crystals had been applied.

Fumi tilted her head, shrugged and walked away. No look or last word back in their direction. She approached Yfaun, narrowed her gaze, and brushed against his shoulder. Not aggressive, but definitely testing. In sixty seconds, Fumi had ignored Bay and Katy, insulted Raisa, demanded a place at the refuge and poked at an assassin. Katy could only dream of being that badass.

Katy raised her head slightly and pressed her forehead against his neck, inhaling, letting her emotions and senses be overwhelmed by the incredible beauty of the moment. “Thank you. Thank you for sharing this with me, even if you’re crazy for thinking I’m your special sparkle princess. Some weird worldbuilding today! I don't believe I've ever explained how people pay rent in the Tenement yet... Very curious what y'all will make of this 😄

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah, go check the slot,” my father told me. “Make sure there’s not any last minute quids.” The slot he referred to was a small horizontal opening in the wall by our front door, sealed off by a tarnished metal plate on a creaky hinge; a lever was embedded in the wall beside it. I pushed the plate open with my fingers, feeling around in the hollow space inside. “Empty,” I said. “Give the lever a pull, just in case.” I did, and waited for the telltale clinking sound. But I got nothing. “Come on,” I sighed, and pulled it again. I don’t know why my father decided I should be the one to do this. The Tenement hated me. Kazuo would have probably had better luck. After the third pull, I heard a clackety-clackety-clack inside the slot. I pushed the plate open and scooped out four quids—colorful little glass balls about the size of my fingertips. Quids were the primary form of currency in the Tenement. Every apartment had a delivery slot just like ours, and throughout the month, quids would appear there, generated by the Tenement as a reward for our good behavior. At least, that was what we told ourselves. In reality, the distribution of quids was notoriously unpredictable. This was, of course, how we paid our rent, though what the Landlord did with all those quids we sent him each month, no one knew. My father and many others theorized that it had something do with keeping the water and electricity going. How exactly that worked was never explained, but it didn’t matter. All we knew was we had to keep doing it, month after month, and not ask questions. Pay the rent or die in the dark.

Katy had explained they were in the Centris version of a short-term rental. Cozier than a hotel, “closer to a real house from home.” Paul and Oran were assigned a room together; to Paul’s mind that made it nothing like home. He was used to his own place, built over the gym he ran. A loan from Patrick had made owning the building possible, and even when finances were tight, Paul could say he was the landlord. These last few days of sharing space were wearing on him; he was too old to be roomies, or a third wheel to the couples of the group.

“After this sphere we should find the Phelans,” one of the bots announced. “Majio, please reverse approach side. You’ll find the proper place to change at the end of this corridor.” “I don’t-” Paul’s eyes bugged out and he grabbed the nearby rail. Yuhwa made for a slalom-like track deep in the walls and started a loop-the-loop. “Whaaaaaa!” he gurgled. Yuhwa smacked his arm. “Infant. Look at the size of this thing. You won’t fall out, and the maneuver is required to switch which side of the sphere we exit.” Sure enough, they’d rotated around and past the floor they’d been on, righting themselves over a new crowd. More screams as they appeared, one of which may have come from him. Paul reassured his masculinity that, at their speed, he was perfectly reasonable in freaking out. That right there was hell’s own roller coaster.

Paul thought Yuhwa asked a great question. What was it about prophecies that made people go ooh, I’ll have that to myself and never speak of it until nearly too late? Then he thought about people spending centuries debating Nostradamus and realized being out and proud with it wasn’t a sure thing, either. Still, it made the nawa seem less noble spiritual order and more like the Illuminati. Between Muškikal hidden libraries, Mikanjo concealing names of triggers, and this lot hoarding info on the Yahdo, he was miffed.

Paul and Patrick rounded the trailbend and spotted the small clearing just as she got out of the water. They stopped short, for once having no words. Yuhwa tilted her head, and called, “All right? You can join me if you want.” “Nice-” Paul broke off and cleared his throat. “Nice suit.” Patrick smirked. “The bikini turns out to be one of the universal things in this futuristic, advanced Aoni? Wouldn’t have predicted that.”

They set off beyond the path, stepping over ferns, moss-covered semi-buried trunks, and around pink-flowered salal and huckleberry shrubs. Their trek scared a jumping mouse who whacked the ground with its tail a few times before leaping away. Distracted by the rodent, Katy managed to face-plant through a spider-web strung between two low-hanging pine boughs. As Bay set down his bag, she flipped her hair maniacally. 
 “Do you see a spider? There’s no spider on my shoulder, right?” Katy shivered. That damn arachnid could get into her curls and hide forever. “Or in my hair? RIGHT?”

The boy had taken a spot on Paul’s bed, but didn’t respond to the Tickle Monster as expected. No wiggling or giggling. A wide-eyed stare, before a whispered, “Kawakona Brother Two, are we now best friends?!” Paul had to laugh. There went the Aoni teaching him new things. In his Universe he knew how to handle kids and was a capable business owner. In the Aoni he learned unfledged Mikanjo children weren’t ticklish and he was just the second brother of the sacred herald of Sundancer. Perfect.

One at a time, the Côttru turned to her, embraced her, the truth of their spirits spellbinding. Malor’s sparks were the embodiment of love; like a parent for a child, or a friend cheering on their dearest friend. They expected nothing in return, offered all they were freely, wanted nothing more than for Malor’s greatest creations to thrive and daringly stretch themselves. Jadoube were meant to pierce the Aoni with their souls, bring species together, and above all be true to their natures.

Katy came out of the loo to see tall guy hovering in her path back to the main room. She knew it was deliberate because those gemstone eyes were focused on her, a half-smile rounding into a smirk. Lah! That soft black hair she wanted to stroke. One step, then two in his direction. A closer view certainly didn’t disappoint, and from here she saw the hint of a tattoo on his upper arms. Not a tribal armband, but hard to discern what it was in the low light. Besides there was so much else to peruse. His chest was epic, the kind of thing she’d expect to see on a Halloween costume for He-Man.

Katy’s blood froze. From the beginning she’d seen Yfaun as terrifying, but this went beyond that. What he said meant their species actively hid their activities from Centris and the Calling. They were deeply embedded, apparently had backup killers, and could slip in and out of the system without a trace. They must have been able to get into Voice House to kill Zina that way, maybe even the last Silvervoice before Mara. Such a convenient accident that had been.
