I can't emphasis how important "atmosphere" is to horror. A lot of modern horror suffers because there's plenty of gore, but no mood, no vibe, and no setting to go with it. Remember that the location itself should be a character, and you need to go out of your way to make the audience see it.

Final Exam is an odd favorite of mine. Has some truly disturbing college pranks, a weirdly sedate killer, and a lot more atmosphere than thrills. If you're like me and enjoy "sleepy slashers," like In A Violent Nature and Terror At Tenkiller then you've probably already seen and loved Final Exam!
