We rush to gloss over the differences and make the stories similar if not identical. In our haste to identify with the other, to have something in common with him, we forcibly equate stories that are often incommensurate, reducing what we are hearing to what we already know.1 What we find most difficult to hear is what is utterly new and different: thoughts, experiences, and emotions that are quite foreign to our own and even to any we have thus far learned about."

People bristle when I say this, but:

It's horrific that at a time of ascendant fascism (driven largely by criminalization), Zohran Mamdani is committed to following through on NYC's 2019 plan to spend $16 billion (a pre-tariff pricetag that's unrealistically low) on building *JAILS* throughout NYC.

An unmasked man sat next to me (masked) and said “are you feeling okay or just preventing illness?” To which I replied “I feel fine but what difference does it make if you’re not wearing a mask?” He said he’d throw one on if I said I was unwell (he didn’t have one), this rationale is lost on me.
