Asylum is about protecting people. But the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act, which received royal assent this week, treats asylum as a border security issue. It continues the trend of criminalising people seeking sanctuary. It builds walls against refugees. We need something different.

Many people were forced to undergo severe trauma by being detained at Campsfield IRC. Now, the government has reopened it. This is horrifying. Immigration detention destroys lives. The government needs to end its use, not expand it.

Our hearts are broken to hear of the lethal attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with the victims whose lives were cut brutally short, with those who are injured, and with those who mourn their lost loved ones.
