New faculty orientation today:

“As the world becomes more AI + tech centered, the humanities become more, not less, important.”

“You might hear about other places closing down departments. They’re not like us. We’re closing nothing.”

“We don’t train students for jobs but to think + be creative.”

The news has been more than a bit grim of late, so hooray for @carbonbrief.org providing some genuine and really meaningful **good** news: the UK's carbon emissions in 2024 were the lowest since 1872, because demand for fossil fuels just keeps decreasing.

🇩🇪 The narrative around Germany’s energy often sounds bleak & despairing, but the reality? Record-breaking solar, renewables at 57% of total power & wind & solar surpassing fossil fuels for the first time! The clean energy transition is real & the future bright & breezy. ☀️⚡ #Renewables #EnergyShift
Germany’s RECORD solar growth pushed renewables to new heights last year. 🇩🇪

Beating its own targets, Germany installed more solar than ever before in 2024, the most in Europe.

So, Brighton, Aston and Hull are going/gone, and the next one is Reading.
Universities have no money, chemistry departments are expensive, and increasingly there is pressure on to close them.
Vandalising the UK science base in this way will do no good in the long run.
