I approached this blog by @adamboxereducation.bsky.social with a fair degree of scepticism because I think coaching is an effective way to make lasting change but he certainly raises many real difficulties in implementing it well.

Questioning Coaching
Instructional Coaching is the current Big Thing in teacher development. But is it all it's cracked up to be, and what are the common barriers to its successful implementation?

I feel like I say this every week but it was just another great and fascinating episode. @adamboxereducation.bsky.social and @amymayforrester.bsky.social - congratulations on a great term of podcasts!

(PS - can you get Liz English on this platform. Loads I would like to ask her!)
What do you get if you cross a turnaround school with a startup school?

Yup - a whole load of problems.

But Liz English is actually doing it, and leading one of the most fascinating and successful schools in the country.

“Selecting an answer from a multiple-choice array is a pale shadow of producing that answer from memory.”

And other gems on how (not) to build an education app from @carlhendrick.substack.com

Particularly good episode with lots of great thinking on assessment and how it can be effective. Also, I learnt a new Japanese word - kyozaikenkyu - meaning knowledge of instructional materials. If this whetted your appetite for Japanese words in an educational context….

Measuring ed. impact is hard, but we’re proud of the methodologies and results here. It’s one school’s data, so we’re careful not to overclaim, but still, we think the correlations in the article tell us and important story.
Can we trace a link between Carousel usage and GCSE outcomes?

We analysed Carousel homework data and student results to try and find out.

Here’s what the data suggests: www.carousel-learning.com/resources/bl...

NEW POST

Schools rightly spend a lot of time thinking about classroom teaching and in-the-moment learning and lesson structure. But without a plan for long-term memory, we are probably wasting our time.

Please do share if you can 🙏🙏

The Long-Term Memory Problem: Why Teaching and Learning Policies Fail
Schools are very good at writing policies about in-the-moment teaching. They are much worse at strategising for long-term memory and learning.

Underreported key details regarding the budget pension changes as far as I can work out:

1. They don't come in until April 2029 - so time to backtrack
2. "Normal" employer/employee pension arrangments available to all aren't affected - only optional salary sacrifice.

If that's right...

This is a thing we should bear in mind when considering personalised learning in education. One man’s “perfectly tailored learning content” is another man’s “bleak classroom of headphone-wearing, screen-captured antisocial individuals”.
Because I am a skinflint I have ads on Netflix and so many of them are just “why have friends when you can have a smart device?” Bleak bleak bleak.
