In a new Op-Ed for @technologyreview.com, I draw on research from my forthcoming book to suggest a playbook for clean energy advocates in these backwards times:

How to make clean energy progress under Trump in the states—blue and red alike
Cheaper energy bills are a nonpartisan issue—no matter where you live.

I travel frequently, am traveling currently, and can report that the amount of political talk I’m overhearing in the airport is unusually high.

Customers always pay, the question is *which* customers-- many would argue it should be the tech companies themselves, and not the rest of us:

Weird pattern emerging of fossil fuel actors using First Amendment to dodge transparency, whether in responding to a U.S. Senator's records request or, in the case of California, resisting compliance with emissions disclosure law:

Nice to see new state-level support for battery storage out of Illinois. Obviously batteries play a critical role in an "all of the above" energy strategy:

Illinois Democrats pass major energy bill to boost battery storage
Gov. JB Pritzker has said he will sign the bill, which aims to increase grid reliability and lower electricity prices.

So much talk over the years about subsidies for renewables and how they shouldn't need to be subsidized if they're so great. To which I respond, the government subsidizes virtually every energy technology ... case in point, from Texas:

E&E News: Texas backs Permian gas-fired power plant with $1.1B loan
The state launched a fund to build gas plants after 2021 power failures left millions of people in the dark and killed more than 200.

In light of yesterday's Georgia PSC election, I'm boosting an
@technologyreview.com piece I wrote last summer. Democrats will emphasize yesterday's win as a win for their party. (1/2)

Excited to speak with a group of physicians today about state-level climate and renewable energy politics and policy. They know the threat that inaction poses to our health, just like to our economy.

Very excited to read this new book by @carleysanya.bsky.social and David Konisky, which just arrived!

GEORGIANS, your Public Service Commission has the final say over your electric bills. Two of the five seats are up for grabs this Election Day. Learn how this commission affects bill affordability and climate action before you head to the polls: ow.ly/XKPQ50XkBoG 🔌💡

Happy Election Day! For all the talk these days of skyrocketing utility bills, & affordability crises, it's unfortunate that one race you won't see receiving much national coverage is the one that probably matters most re: utility bills: Georgia's Public Service Commission. (1/2)

"More than $1 billion of the scrapped grants were slated for state governments." This administration's recklessness and lawlessness is forcing a rethink of fiscal federalism. And the irony of this, coming from what was formerly the party of states' rights:

States are strapped for cash right now -- and the federal government isn't helping -- so I understand policymakers are facing tough choices. But using cap-and-trade revenue for things other than climate mitigation undermines the efficacy of the program. (1/)

DOE's "emergency" orders are causing all kinds of new problems for FERC. For an administration that says they want "energy dominance" and less regulation, the approach has been far from thoughtful:
