First, yes I love graduations because it’s a physical example of people meeting goals. It’s the same reason one of my favorite places is the finish line of a long run. You get to see people achieve things they set out to do.
Amidst all the terribleness, I think graduation is beautiful because everyone there recognizes it as a good thing. It’s meaningful and shared and joyful. I wish we could somehow capture the feeling and mail it around the country.

Thank you Alex for the kind words and support! Always wonderful connecting with others who love California history.
I have been reading @joshdmorg.bsky.social's excellent book on the Folsom prison escape. What I like most about his approach is how he (very early on) established a personal connection to the events from so long ago.
From the crowd generated fantasy casting of The Folsom Prison Bloody 13 at my recent reading in Roseville a few names came back including Mads Mikkelsen, Pedro Pascal, JK Simmons Any to add?

Is this an appropriate time to recognize I was well into adulthood before I realized there were raisins in Its Its and I’ve never recovered.
I spent my childhood diligently picking out every single raisin, finding out far too late in life that bran flakes exist for this reason 🤣🫠
The entire concept of raisin bran is bonkers.

"Do you want a bunch of grapes in your cereal?"

"what? No."

"What about if I dehydrate them to the point of chewiness"

"Keep talking."

The great thing about writing is there is literally nothing stopping you. Sometimes I hear, I don’t have time… there’s not a deadline. I don’t know what to write about….we are surrounded by stories. If you think you want to write, then write.

How it started and how it’s going. The letter my great grandmother received in 1903 and the book that resulted and came out in June of this year.

This morning I was at a memorial service and mass for a community leader who died after a life of serving others. This is your reminder to do the thing, take the trip, and tell people you love them.

That lucky moment when the scrapbook of one of the subjects of your book is housed in the special collection of your Alma mater and the librarian stays late to make sure you get it. Thank you University of the Pacific Holt-Atherton Library!

As a nonfiction writer, I’m trying to learn the balance between, “I just need a little more detail here, and OHMYGOD WHO WILL CARE!” In a related note, Former Folsom Prison warden JJ Smith was born on his fathers 240 acre cattle ranch along the American River.

My #nonfiction #author friends will appreciate this. Current in process book includes the story of “Lloyd Sampsell,” the “Yachting Bandit.” I get the mugshot from the Archives and it says “Floyd.” Confirmed it’s him but phew, a little scared.

This but with 19th century maps. Yes, nonfiction writer here.

If you need me, I’ll be at the State Archives.
Are you even writing a book if you don't spend 10 minutes Google street view exploring a mall parking lot?

Thank you to everyone at the @california_archive for their help this morning as I get closer to publishing the story of the 1903 escape from Folsom Prison. Contract signed with publisher with scheduled 2024 release.
