1. Be Brave. Avoid helpless/hopeless talk. Authoritarians want you to feel powerless because it makes their work easier. Courage, faith, and optimism are essential. Fascism feeds on cynicism and pessimism. Starve it.

Just read the response from Costco to shareholders requesting it back down from DEI. It was glorious. It begins "Our Board has considered this proposal and believes … an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary." and gets better. A happy investor #diversityandinclusion

I’ve been working for over 25 years to find ways to help students find a love for reading and it wasn’t until I recognized and acknowledged the complexity of students experiences with reading, that I started doing a better job.

If there is one thing, I do know about the children I teach it is that all of them carry complex emotions when it comes to the act of reading.
And we can't teach reading without acknowledging and considering that in our teaching and learning experiences.

So true. Direct instruction has its place, especially for teaching introductory information about a topic, but research has also shown that students need different methods for learning critical thinking skills. #aplitchat
...to find patterns, to advocate for solutions, to understand multiple perspectives. The world is complicated -- lectures and testing are not. #aplitchat
