Medical degree on the wall, half-finished coding tutorials on the desk, coffee stains on both. Equally confused by human anatomy and database architecture.
My son’s nursery fees are up by almost 10% and the pay offer from the government equates to about 4.5%.

This is an easy decision for me.
We did it before, and we’ll do it again.

The ballot for industrial action is open until 7 July.

Vote YES today and help us secure pay restoration for resident doctors in England

This thread comes with a soundtrack. Consider listening to Goldfinger's cover of "99 Red Balloons" as you read and by the end you'll see the connection between it and common clinical examination.

I am very disappointed by this - because I love an em dash and use them all the time in messages, emails and posts.

So you’re an evil genius designing a death ray? Well have I got a story for you!

Did you know that former US Vice President Dick Cheney had the wireless capabilities of ICD disabled? His security team feared terrorists might hack the device and assassinate him by triggering a fatal heart rhythm!

Do any UK #MedSky know a plastics resident doctor in North Bristol called Harry who is on call today? SHO tier? Because I want to get word to him that he was simply superb today when I was referring from a peripheral DGH.

Meanwhile, Sauron secures funding. Really. Two tech businesses that were independently named after objects from The Lord of the Rings have formed a partnership – or should that be a fellowship?…

I’ve started reading “Why we get the wrong politicians” by Isabel Hardman.

First days and weeks as a new MP sound very similar to a freshly rotated doctor.

I’m ST7 and nearing the end of training. Based on the IMT cut off this year and this #StateOfMed report I know that I wouldn’t be able to enter training if I was applying now.
Today's #StateOfMed report shows a medical training system under severe strain.

There aren't enough training jobs available for resident doctors. This means unprecedented competition for posts, with both UK and IMG medics left to wonder if their vocation is still worth it.

The same but different - I ask people what would happen to their eGFR if I cut out their kidneys.

Then I ask them how they would die (apart from blood loss, in this theoretical world I’m a dab hand at mid-ward round bilateral nephrectomies).

Then they know the emergency indications for RRT.
For ward round teaching I mainly focus on the concepts of static versus dynamic measurement

I ask trainees what would happen to their PaO2 if they hold their breath for a minute...

Dropout.tv is great and you should subscribe.

If you want to test it out first there are some full episodes of their shows on YouTube.

Or I’ll share my login with you so you can watch some of their other content - because their CEO is on board with that.

This is on my Christmas list. I know a bit about TB and I’m looking forward to knowing more.
My new book, Everything Is Tuberculosis, explores the history of our deadliest infectious disease. It's also about our horrifying present: TB still kills kills over a million people per year, even though it's been curable since the 1950s.
