A local artist in Regent ND wanted to do something for his town which, like most small towns in North Dakota, was withering away. He has spent the last 30 years building sculptures along the 32 miles leading from I-94 to the town of Regent. He named it The Enchanted Highway. I've posted a couple of pics in the past, but wanted to do it justice with a longer series of photos.

Looking at this, you would think farmers are having a great year. Far from it. You're seeing grain being piled up with nowhere to go. Fields were planted to fill expected contracts overseas. I don't know about corn specifically, but their situation is probably similar to the problems soybean farmers are having. It seems I remember hearing that last year, 1/3 of the soybean harvest was bought by China. In response to tRump's tariffs, they have bought zero this year. I actually saw a farmer running his combine through his field, chewing up his corn crop and ejecting it back onto the ground. It probably happens once in a while, but I've never seen it. That would be a farmer who has determined it would cost less to waste the crop than try to sell it. We might see food prices come down temporarily as a result. Next year, though, there will probably be fewer farmers surviving, and those farmers will plant less of everything in anticipation of next year's expected demand. If we manage to get rid of this clown show in a few years, a stable business environment will likely spur increasing demand. The supply will no longer be close to meeting that demand, and prices will skyrocket. Farmers are one of tRump's bigger constituencies, and the urge is to just say they're getting what they voted for, but their misfortune is hurting all of us. I believe things will continue to get worse, even if stability is restored. Are we great yet?

Miscanthus zebra grass
Autumn plumes 🌾
The fine soft fall plumes of Miscanthus zebra grass. The stalks have a green and light green stripe in the summer and turn these lovely fading yellow browns in the fall and produce the fine plumes at the top getting ready for fall. They are lovely for about a month before high winds or the first snow take them down. The plant is usually cut to about a foot or two tall over winter and will emerge again in the spring. I drew this plant in colored pencil and graphite for a xeriscape garden book that was published years ago. Very challenging to draw the plumes yet managed to and got it published 🌾

Who needs 🩷-color, when you have attitude
Dried seed head of a willowherb (blooms pink). The plant is brown and dry, with narrow, curled seed hairs and threadlike remnants of the seed pods. The background is blurred. Focus on the delicate, spirally twisted plant structures. Vertrockneter Fruchtstand eines Weidenröschens (blüht rosa). Die Pflanze ist braun und trocken, mit schmalen, eingerollten Samenhaaren und fadenförmigen Resten der Samenschoten. Der Hintergrund ist unscharf. Fokus auf die filigranen, spiralig gedrehten Pflanzenreste.
