I absolutely 100% agree with this part. Why people feel the need to film themselves doing off tube commentary and then post it on social media is a complete mystery to me. It’s not about the commentator, as JP says.

Football journalism, how 'match reports' have evolved and why writing needs defending against metrics and 'content.'
My commentary for @observeruk.bsky.social

Football journalism needs defending – it won’t surrender ...
The term ‘match report’ is misleading, and serves no purpose in describing what football journalism does

Some commentators use a computer, some write it all in longhand, there is no set way, whatever works for you, but as I hand write all my match notes a broken thumb is not ideal….

Many of the guests in this series are fascinating to listen to - and this is a great episode with Gary Richardson. Highly recommend.
The legendary Garry Richardson spent 50 years at the BBC interviewing everyone from George Best to Bill Clinton and delivering the sports news (including unreliable racing tips) on Radio 4’s flagship Today programme. Now he joins me on the latest ‘Life Goals’ podcast

I had 21 years freelancing for Eurosport & this article from @zonal-marking.bsky.social sums up the football coverage perfectly, from AFCON to Eurogoals to Serie A & everything else. If you could

6000 words of oral history on the glory days of Eurosport's football coverage, ahead of its disappearance from our EPGs tomorrow. Fond memories of Eurogoals, Africa Cup of Nations, Serie A, Copa America, Gold Cup, Asian Cup. Farewell.
