Cartoonist. Letterer. Old nerd.
Mendicant. False Gentleman.
Pinned
Time to introduce myself (again)! I’m John Boren, and mostly I like to post my comics and stuff from my sketchbook. Occasionally, I self-publish mini comics, and I’m open to commissions. Otherwise, I’m pretty low-key. Anyway, hope you like my feed, and as always, please, scroll responsibly.
I took out the air conditioner that sits in this window, getting ready for the first freeze tonight. It’s not the most spectacular view, but I like it. Cue the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving music.

Fascinating thread on 1970s-80s animation methods, techniques, & materials
This evening I have been researching what paints animators used in the 70s, as you do. 🧵

I wanted to identify exactly what colours Filmation would have used in their TAS artwork. Seems like they used Cel-Vinyl, going by the codes used on spec sheets. I found a handy hex value spreadsheet too!

DROIDS (1985)
and another happy 40th to droids, whose main title seems to be fully custom (or at least based on a font i've never found), but whose subtitle is GROTESQUE NO. 9 ITALIC (with LUCASFILM being set in what looks like NEWS GOTHIC with numbers from AKZIDENZ-GROTESK)

EWOKS (1985)
happy 40th to the animated ewoks, whose title is set in a slightly altered PUTTY BOLD (with LUCASFILM being set in FUTURA BOOK)

i messed up and identified some star trek fonts by accident. @starfleetdesign.bsky.social was kind enough to not yell at me and tell me to stay in my lane
Credit to @starwarsfonts.bsky.social for likely solving some of the bigger mystery fonts from earlier ☝️ in this thread.

The vintage NBC logo closely resembles BENGUIAT EPHRAM ARISTALIC while the James Blish cover logo seems to be GUSTAV MONOGOTHIC or RHEIN GUSTAV GOTHIC.

@wilwheaton.net Glad to find you are on this thing! Missed you since the twitter days. We’ve never interacted before, but always liked what you had to say. Hope you and yours are well.

Will have to try this method out
for real though it's the first thing i do. this is what my pages look like before i start drawing (although the balloons don't get tails until after i've penciled). it really helps me visualize the space tbh. and then again with paneling (second step)

I don't know why not. But I've never seen anyone post the animated Star Trek SNW OP with the musical acapella OP. Seems like the logical fit.🖖

Good thread.
“The Many Deaths of Laila Starr” by Ram V and Filipe Andrade makes ample use of wide panels that take up the entire width of the comics page. This is not an unusual technique, but this story uses it more than most. How does this affect our interactions with the story? 1/11

Want to draw rooms but don't want to learn perspective?
You need a 3D program like Blender.

Don't want to learn a 3D program?
Ikea got your back.

Go to the ikea room planner page. Choose what room you want, kitchen, dining room, office, etc
Then make a room...

In regards to J.K. Rowling—

I knew something was up with her, all the way back in the first book, when Dumbledore gave those bullshit points to Gryffindor when Slytherin won, fair and square

I love Tubi. It has most, if not all, of everything I want to watch. I don’t talk about it much, because good things are always ruined when the money notices, but this is honestly very good news that needs sharing
That's not all, folks! Nearly 800 Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts from 1930–1969 are now streaming free on Tubi. Once pulled from HBO Max, the classics return in bundled episodes.

I’ve always been one of those grumpy dust bunnies about art, but lately I’m thinking that’s a mistake. I love craft, and I always will, but I see now there’s something to be said for just knocking something out and getting by on enthusiasm
A comic about making comics (the alt text took longer to write than the comic did to draw * I drew this a few years ago)
