The downside of travel in winter in sometimes accidents happen. Fortunately, we’re not in an accident but we are stopped on I-90 outside Fredonia because of one. Hope those affected are OK but this could be a while.

I think what’s coolest about Matthew Schaefer is he barely played last year so the hype machine for him was muted. He was always the top prospect but he was still kind of a mystery box because of it.

With a 4-on-4 the Sabres pulled Luukkonen for the extra attacker down by three and...... it didn't go that well. Cole Sillinger deposits one sans goalie with 8:14 to go in the third to make it 5-1

Provorov can't handle the puck and he and Benson race back after it. Provorov holds him and Benson gets busted for embellishment. Classic play really.

Columbus keeping Buffalo to the outside in the zone and the Sabres aren't getting looks enough to even try to go to the net. Solid man-up skating from the Jackets one-on-one to keep chances from happening

Tage Thompson's shot knocked the blade right out of one of Mason Marchment's skates and the effort to try and help him get to the bench was impressive. There was Damon Severson trying to tow him to the bench and he had to bail on that to get into the play. He made it, but what a scene

Columbus well aware that Buffalo has to take chances to create some offense is using long flips to center to see if they catch Buffalo off guard for more odd-man chances

This is the first time we've seen a line shuffle in a while and there seem to be some hiccups in chemistry and knowing where someone's going to be. The reads are a little rusty. But Columbus is all over Buffalo if they take the puck to the wall or further outside. Two guys on the puck at all times

Mathieu Olivier with a drag backhand after a puck was lobbed out of the zone. Olivier surrounded by multiple Sabres puts it by Luukkonen to make it 4-1 nearly midway through the second. That's a goal that's been pretty reflective of their overall effort today

It's been a while since it's really happened, but that was a throwback terrible first period from Buffalo. They've been very good about turning things around after that and, as @markscheig.bsky.social shared with me during intermission, Columbus has been quite poor in third periods.

A less-than great first period from the Sabres and some great taking-advantage-of-the-situation by Columbus - it's 3-1 Jackets. Columbus with a 15-10 SOG edge, but Buffalo with the advantage in attempts 25-21.
