"Documenting what is happening in our community is not a crime."

Georgia Fort, speaking just after her release from federal custody, is right. Journalism is not a crime. The free press is constitutionally protected-something the current administration wants to ignore.

CPJ has warned about US press freedom for years.In April we said:"If we let the abnormal become normal, many more freedoms will be at risk–no matter what your politics”.The arrest of Lemon and Fort are a breach of their rights as journalists and an affront to all US citizens.

It’s literally the job of columnists to have opinions. Sacking them for expressing their views not only chills the individual’s speech but free speech in general.

So much of what we know about starvation in Gaza is because of reporting by Anas Al-Sharif. Israel targeted and killed him and his entire crew while they were in a press tent outside a hospital. I spoke with @jodieginsberg.bsky.social, head of the CPJ @pressfreedom.bsky.social for @slate.com.

Israel just targeted and killed an entire news crew. This is not "just what happens" to reporters in war. Israel has killed more journalists in the 22 months since October 7 '23 than were killed WORLDWIDE in the 3 years between '20 and '22.
This is murdering the messenger.
