It’s literally the job of columnists to have opinions. Sacking them for expressing their views not only chills the individual’s speech but free speech in general.

So much of what we know about starvation in Gaza is because of reporting by Anas Al-Sharif. Israel targeted and killed him and his entire crew while they were in a press tent outside a hospital. I spoke with @jodieginsberg.bsky.social, head of the CPJ @pressfreedom.bsky.social for @slate.com.

Israel just targeted and killed an entire news crew. This is not "just what happens" to reporters in war. Israel has killed more journalists in the 22 months since October 7 '23 than were killed WORLDWIDE in the 3 years between '20 and '22.
This is murdering the messenger.

I have been a reporter for 25 years. I know the risks reporting in war zones. This is not that situation. This is systematic silencing by Israel.

If we do not act now, there will be no one left in Gaza to tell anyone’s story.

The number and size of lawsuits being issued against the media by the President is unprecedented and a clear attempt to undermine free speech protections ingrained in the Constitution. Press freedom is crucial for the public's right to know - and it's being strangled.
