DCS Kat Frank and her AI partner, Detective Lock, find themselves working on a new murder investigation when a dismembered body is found at a local fishing spot. Using Kat's unmatched detective skills and Lock's advanced data analysis they are able to quickly identify the victim. However, the discovery of another body nearby stirs up rumors about Kat's past case involving The Aston Strangler. Was the right man convicted, or is an innocent person behind bars? I absolutely loved this book, and the series as a whole - it's one of the best I've ever read. If you're a fan of crime fiction then you will love it too as it's a great murder mystery, but it's really so much more than that, and I think this book would appeal to everyone. The inclusion of an AI detective provides a unique take on the police procedural novel and explores the realities of technology integrating with humanity in a way we don't yet truly understand. As Lock becomes more intelligent he begins to question who he is, and he even starts to think it's about time he had a body - but what will he have to do to get one? Ultimately this book, and the whole series, explores what it means to be human. It tackles some really big themes around grief, parenting, identity, loneliness, prejudice, and trauma in a way that really makes you stop and think. The characters are what really make this book for me, each of them are relatable, flawed, and oh so real. Human Remains is Book 3 in the series and it's honestly the best one yet! I really didn't know if it could live up to the ending of Book 2 but it genuinely surpasses it! While all of the books can be read as standalones I'd recommend reading them in order to get the best possible reading experience.
