If Trump was President in 1940
March 3, 2025 at 12:45 PM
Is anyone else concerned that the way Starmer, Macron and other European (& Canadian) leaders are approaching the Ukraine situation will force Trump to choose between Europe and Russia? And that all the signs are he may well choose Russia??

“For 236 years, our military has accepted the principle of civilian control of the military. What may seem like an arcane principle to most Americans, is essential to the healthy civil-military relations that drive effective national security decision-making.”

It’s that old adage about not wrestling with pigs!!

I think every situation is different, but letting diplomacy work may be a sensible approach here. Journalists are always fishing for the controversial quote - it helps their exposure. But we shouldn’t always be critical when politicians don’t give it to them.

Of course, but a UK minister saying that in an interview is unlikely to be helpful. Escalating conflict with Trump doesn’t appear to be a recipe for success, IMO. That doesn’t mean you can’t be firm in private.

I listened to your interview with Peter Kyle and think you are being harsh on him. He’s clearly determined not to escalate the situation, which seems sensible and what Denmark is asking EU leaders to do? Him taking your bait wouldn’t be helpful IMO

"The focus of our attention shouldn't be another inquiry, it should be implementing those recommendations."

Barbara Mills KC, the first Black Chair of the Bar, tells @ayshahtull.bsky.social the debate on grooming gang inquiries distracts from the focus on victims.

Barbara Mills KC on being first Black Chair of the Bar

A good question…
US teen nicotine vaping dropped 70% over the past 5 years, to a 10-year low. Teen cigarette smoking "mysteriously" dropped 90%, to near zero, over the past decade. It's now at a 50-year low. Teen nicotine use is at an all-time low.

Why is moral panic over teen vaping at an all-time high?

Some people in recent days have alleged a ‘cover-up’ over the grooming & rape of hundreds of young girls in predominantly northern UK towns, leading to calls for a ‘national’ public inquiry into child sexual exploitation

FWIW here’s a non-exhaustive list of inquiries into #CSE in last 12 yrs…

Good to see journalists standing up for a free press. Sad to see media owners suppressing it.
WaPo cartoonist resigns after Post rejects her cartoon of billionaires paying tribute to Donald Trump, one of whom happens to be her boss, Jeff Bezos.

Satire has literally died.

Company established by Musk in the UK 3 weeks ago on December 12th!! Why we wonder!!

Pull your finger out @uklabourparty.bsky.social, grow some balls and stop even more "corruption" destroying what's left of our democracy

Right now you have a majority the likes of which you might never see again
This is important.
'We don’t know what that company is for but if Musk did want to pour £100m into the next UK election, as it’s been reported, this is how he could do it.'

That’s not a coincidence.
That’s corruption.

EVALI was caused by vaping illicit THC vapes cut with vitamin E acetate - nothing whatsoever to do with commercially available nicotine vapes.

“Recent theoretical studies show that unrealistically high vaping temperatures, in excess of at least 700 °C, are required for any significant levels of ketene to form from VEA or other acetates”
November 29, 2024 at 5:14 PM
“The second issue centers on concerns that real-world vaping power settings do not provide enough energy to produce ketene”
November 29, 2024 at 5:13 PM
But this study involves vaping and dabbing cannabinoids rather than commercially available nicotine vapes?

Ketane?

I would add nicotine vaping to your list.

This story highlights perfectly why the Govt should keep its focus on helping smokers to quit and not get overly distracted by young people who vape. Anything that makes vape products less appealing, affordable, accessible, enjoyable will impact adults just as much as youth & reduce switching.
November 27, 2024 at 10:26 AM
How on earth will this be enforced? I put in an FOI request to Richmond Borough Council - in the last 5 yrs they have not issued a single fine or penalty against a retailer for selling vapes to minors. And yet the majority routinely sell to young teenagers. Maybe get this right first???

I wrote a recent LinkedIn article critiquing the bill and other recent announcements - I'd welcome any comments. In a nutshell... 1) keep the primary focus on adults who smoke; 2) implement existing laws before introducing new restrictions. www.linkedin.com/pulse/tobacc...
