African American Jean Baptiste du Sable from what is now Haiti built the first permanent settlement in 1779. That settlement is now known as Chicago.

Named for MLK & Malcom X, Malcom King College didnt pay its teachers, didn’t charge tuition & didn’t have a single building or a campus. But it gave the students whose average age was 32 & were 90% Black, 10% Puerto Rican a college education.

Chaplain and Army Lt Colonel Allen Allensworth founded Allensworth, CA in 1908. This community was one where African Americans were in control of the government and businesses.
