We're looking down a highway at a mess of headlights that are not clearly decipherable. On the right, a triangular sign catches the light in an interesting way. The sky above is a kind of purple/pink/silver glow.

Forest dreamscape, Oct 16, 2025. #chicago #photography
Color, portrait-orientation photo looking through tree branches toward a blinding sun that just appears as pure white blotting out the upper-right corner, and leaving a few circular lens flares elsewhere in the image. The top-left and middle of the image are a mess of leaves and branches--some clear and sharp and distinct, some blurry and dreamlike. The bottom of the image fades into blackness. The overall feeling it gives me is like waking up from a dream on the forest floor, looking up through the canopy, before you've shaken off the dream and before your eyes are used to the blinding sun.

I'm trying to find a good 4-5 day bike ride for summer, centered on Chicago. I have a 400mi budget. Looking at (1) Chi->Davenport (IA) (via Starved Rock) and back (via Dixon); (2) Chi->Peoria->Normal-Back; or (3) Chi->Muskegon->Ferry->Milwaukee-back. Black and white photo taken from a car driving eastbound on the interstate at night. The car is passing under an overpass, which takes up the top third of the frame. You can see grain in the bridge concrete, streaking away from the horizon, off the top of the page. The road is the bottom 50% of the image, with lane lines starting off the left and right side and then disappearing into the black shadows before they reach the horizon line. Near the horizon, some black, tree-covered hills on either side of the road descend down to where the road is. Some traffic is haed. A pair of of circular headlights in the oncoming lane, and some wild lights that have bounced around on our side and look like an ECG readout of a heart attack. Wisps of smoke or fog or haze waft above the treeline at the horizon.

Black and white photo taken in a car moving north on 90/94E around Grand / Milwaukee or so. In the foreground left, a dark pickup truck hauling a trailer streaks through the night. In front of it, an overpass bridge is harshly lit by an overhead lamp that isn't reaching the left or right side, making it nearly vanish into shadows. All the highlights have a little handheld/car jitter, resulting in a banana or crescent moon or capital J shape.

Color photograph taken of two pedestrians in a crosswalk. The photo was taken while in motion, so the pair are significantly motion blurred, and the background (mostly black, save some streaky neon lights) even more so. It's impossible to make out details in the pedestrians. Both appear to have shoulder-length red or blonde hair, black clothes, and the one in back appears to have sparkles in her leggings, the explosion of colors of which capture the focus in the image.

Black and white photograph taken from northbound I90/94E in Chicago, in the Jane Byrne Interchange, with three overpasses soaring overhead. The car was traveling about 70 mph, so everything is both motion-blurred and suffering from some disorienting jitter from the car bouncing along. On the right of the image, a minivan is just ahead of us in the right lane. In the distance, some 20-40 story buildings jut into the sky, but are trisected by the overpasses. The camera captures interesting overlap in the buildings and overpasses where they should cleanly cut each other but here are overlapped in trippy ways.

Black and white photo taken from a car moving northbound on I 90/94-E in the south side of Chicago. On the left is the red line, in between the two sets of interstate lanes. Both it and our car are moving forward, but at different speeds, so there are several levels of motion blur happening. The train is metallic and reflecting external light, and it's also emanating its own light, making it appear in high-contrast against the rest of the nighttime image.

Wolf Lake, overcast, at 70mph #chicago #photography
Color photo taken semi-randomly out the passenger window while driving the skyway from illinois to indiana. In the lower part of the window, the guardrail keeping me out of the lake is visible. Above that, we see the embankment/shore in reddish hues. Above that, the lake and then the far shoreline and trees. The top third--the sky--is slightly green-tinted. The whole thing is heavily blurred in a left (the direction of car motion) to right fashion, resulting in a painterly, Impressionist look.

Do any Chicago folks know why there would have been like 10x as many guys fishing at the USSteel inlet (~84th and lake shore) today, vs normal? Usually when I bike past there I see like 2 guys. Today there must have been 20. Wondering if some fish species is randomly there in Dec.

Black and white photo of a country home. The tones are mostly underexposed and shadow-ey. Even the sky is a fairly mid gray, and the snowy front yard maybe barely passes the 60% lightness mark. Across the sky, there is an interesting cross-hatching pattern of faint lines. The ones going diagonally up-and-right are electrical wires. The ones going the other diagonal are phantom pixels from foreground trees that blurred almost to invisibility because the car was moving as this shot was taken out the passenger window. The house is similarly blurred, but in ways that aren't uniform and leave certain parts captured at different offsets/times. The overall effect is like a house being swept away by the early stages of a tornado in a dream.

Inexplicably, there is a neon reflection between her feet that looks like a red lightning bolt--presumably a reflection, but of something not in the rest of the frame.

Next to it we see a well-captured evergreen tree and the ghostly apparition of some other tree that looks golden and floating. Bottom of scene is snow, streaked by motion. Top of the scene is similar--a dark grey overcast sky streaked with foreground trees that are merely streaky blurs passing by. Blurry/streaked color photo of rural landscape. a snowy field in the foreground, two single-story structures in the midground, a cell phone tower rising above them, and a line of trees at the horizon. in the foreground, trees next to the road are rendered practically invisible by the car speed vs shutter speed, but the trees leave horizontal streaks that look like brush strokes across the image. The ponds across the road from Gary Airport. Toxic but solumn and beautiful. This time of year, they're frozen over and snow covered. Trees that are really trying hard but looking pretty gnarly are doing their best to thrive in the muck. Skyway as it bisects Wolf Lake. In the distance, we see BP's Whiting Refinery turning Canadian tar sands into refined petroleum and plumes of exhaust. Power lines traverse the sky above the bike path.
