I had the honor of joining In Our Time for last year’s Sack of Rome episode. I recorded in Chicago so didn’t get to meet Melvyn in person, but I was struck by his preparation, curiosity, and erudition. His team was also incredibly impressive. I hope the show finds a way to continue Melvyn’s success.
A huge moment -- Melvyn Bragg steps down from In Our Time after over a quarter of a century. What a programme and what a legacy! Just a model for how to make great, clever, engaging radio, and a twenty-seven-year experiment that proves there's a huge global audience for smart, scholarly programming.

How do I become the academic equivalent of that billionaire tech bro who injects his son’s blood in a quixotic attempt to stay forever young?
The academic’s mid-summer crisis is a mid-life crisis in miniature:

You realize summer is half gone, & not only that: you see that the longest & least burdened days came early, & they are well past. You compare all you thought you’d do against the days remaining & grieve for what never will be

Respectfully, Senator, “agonizing” is trying to figure out what on earth to do when your sick, frail parent has to leave their nursing home.
Lisa Murkowski talks to the press shortly after she voted, quietly, “aye” on Trump’s tax bill. She said she hopes the House and Senate go to conference to improve it and called her vote “agonizing.”
