👏 The world's highest court has ruled that states have legal duties to act on climate change and that inaction violates human rights.

A huge victory for the planet, for the future, and led by the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change.

"Who pays the price for climate destruction around the globe?
Not the fossil fuel industry pocketing profits and taxpayer subsidies as their products wreak havoc.
Everyday people suffer, with their lives and livelihoods," says UN SG Antonio Guterres

A lesson we never seem to learn: you can't cut emissions just by building out renewables. You also have to stop burning fossil fuels. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/c...
U.S. Efforts to Cut Emissions Stalled in 2024 as Power Demand Surged
After staying flat for nearly two decades, electricity use is starting to rise again, and the boom in wind and solar power hasn’t kept pace.

#Botswana submitted its updated 2030 #NDC:

▶️ Kudos 👏 for updating the 2030 climate target! NDCs collectively fall dramatically short for this decade
▶️ The NDC clearly shows the central role of climate #finance and in particular more #energy finance

"A betrayal"
"A shameful, moral failure"

Just some of the reflections on #COP29.

But how do we move forward? How do we protect public and planetary health?

We often conflate “addressing false information” with “arguing with dismissives.”

But as I often say, even an angel from God with brand new stone tablets saying “global warming is real” wouldn’t sway the 10% who are dismissive.

For the other 90%, though, debunking myths is key to unlocking action!
Just coauthored a paper that says something which may seem obvious to many but still needs to be argued: why misinformation must not be ignored. Specifically we argue that 1) misinformation is prominent & 2) has a negative impact on people psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...

It’s exhausting to hear reporters lazily referencing the “unpopular carbon tax” while giving up on informing us that the reason it’s “unpopular” is the successful conservative misinformation campaign ignoring that it’s better than price neutral for people & is a bare minimum tool for climate action.

First post and three emotions, off the back of COP29: Betrayal at the failure of developed countries to deliver finance for humankind, rage at the influence of the fossil fuel industry in climate decision-making, and determination to continue as part of our movement for people + planet over profit.
