A fun game I play watching #TheLastofUs season 2 is:

How few days did they manage to schedule Catherine O’Hara for this episode?

Final Draft 13 will not let me write the word “gorilla” without automatically changing it to “guerrilla” and it’s making this scene about an African jungle expedition impossible to write!!

Can anyone else check if this happens on your machine (I’m on a Mac)? It’s the only app that does this to me.

“Dear valued client(s)” is a great way to start an email to let your client(s) know how little you value them.

Selling an item on Facebook Marketplace is 2 weeks of responding “Yes” to “Is this still available?” messages until you finally take the thing to Goodwill.

Hey #Scriptsky, how BADLY does your character WANT something?

If your character doesn’t care, the reader never will.

Here are 2 types of weak protagonists to avoid, because they don’t WANT something badly enough:

Just watched Snow WOKE, and how DARE they!

1) No Cybertrucks ANYWHERE!

2) MINED gemstones instead of FRACKING for natural gas!

3) DELIBERATELY cast Snow White with someone who ISN’T EVEN Kid Rock!

Hey #Scriptsky, is your character STUCK in their conflict?

So you’ve come up with a brilliant problem, but when the going gets tough, why don't they just walk away?

If your audience asks that question… you’ve lost them.

Here are 3 ways to make sure your character is truly STUCK:

Hey #Scriptsky, is your protagonist truly ACTIVE?

You already know that every story needs an active protagonist, but we can sometimes trick ourselves into thinking we’ve made our characters active when they are not.

Here are two traps to avoid when making your characters ACTIVE:

Audiences are always asking questions in their heads (whether they realize it or not). Anticipating those answers is why they care enough to keep watching.

As writers, we must ask ourselves (and answer!) just as many questions. This is an excellent thread on questions from The Office writers room:
When I worked on The Office, Greg Daniels had a list of questions he asked of every story. Some were show-specific (eg “Are we saying something truthful if exaggerated about office life?”), but many are applicable to any script. Here’s a little thread on them…

I always get a kick out of discovering find/replace mistakes in a script.

Just read a scene in Istanbul where characters are taking in the beautiful sights of "Hagia Jacqueline."

Hey #Scriptsky, have you ever heard that you should “write what you know”?

It’s good advice, but it can feel limiting. I’ve never been a doctor, lawyer, or cop — does that mean I shouldn’t write those stories? No!

Here’s how I authentically "write what I know" without limiting myself:

Hey #Scriptsky, do you use an “Orphans” document?

I find it an incredibly helpful tool when I’m stuck on a rewrite and hesitant to make changes for fear that I’ll lose something I love about what’s already there. Here’s how I do it…

Hey #Scriptsky, have you heard that “every story has to have a beginning, middle, and end”?

Me too... and I find that advice worse than useless! ANYTHING can have a “beginning,” “middle,” and “end" depending how you slice it.

So here’s how I think of B, M, E when it comes to storytelling:

Hey #Scriptsky!

I’m starting a new thing where each week I’ll share a screenwriting tip I picked up in my decade-plus career as a TV writer with the hope that someone out there finds it useful.

So give a follow if you’re into that kind of thing. (You can always block me later if my advice sucks!)
