Fine, I’ll do the silly jar meme. Probably no surprises, but here it is. A lot of it I feel is situation or partner dependent. But the overflowing jars always get me. Always.
I thought she was supposed to be a fellow blue-hair enjoyer?

Put this one back in the over for just a second to re-balance some of the colors. Colors are hard, and can really make a very noticeable difference.

The hair render is the surprise win.

Scyther is one of my favorite Pokémon, but I'll always hate that they can't learn Fly. If they could, I'd have one on my team.

But still one of the coolest visual designs. Complex, with a very dynamic pose, I was "afraid" of this one. Unfortunately, I'm not thrilled with the result. It's the head.

Here's my hot take. Mr. Mime's hands would be easier to get to look right if they were more human-like. His right hand (and how it overlaps with the hair) was needed the most tweaking.

Followed by the shoes. No real render on this one, but that's okay.

(Mr. Mime and Mrs. Ketchum fuck)

Of course the Mega Starmie in fishnets and boots would be my most-liked Pokémon drawing. I blame @aninnocentowl.bsky.social.

I hope you're happy.
November 16, 2025 at 5:42 PM
The challenge with Starmie is the same as Staryu, mostly in the lighting. Gold/shiny surfaces are hard to be convincing with. But also the perspective on the core jewel. It's not facing straight toward the viewer.

After the announcement of Starmie's mega evolution... Check the reply if you dare.

Staryu was more challenging than I was expecting. Very human (Machoke) and very geometric Pokémon (Staryu) both need to be very accurate to look "right" since it's much easier to notice mistakes.

That and a surprisingly complex coloring and lighting made this one trickier than expected.

Not my best outing lately as far as accuracy to the reference. Especially the black spots I just kinda went for "close enough" and "feeling right."

But overall I think it works.

Fuck yeah, Seaking!

There's something I find deeply disturbing about a fish with Rolling Stone lips.

Banged out the lines super efficiently on this one. It was the color that took forever. Getting the hue on the red-orange was a huge pain.

Not to mention the weirdness of shading those fins. Are they translucent?
November 11, 2025 at 1:12 AM
For as complex as Seadra is, it took me just over two hours. A little more than twice as long as Kangaskhan, and I have no real idea why.

Seadra might also be the Pokemon that has the most (important) highlights, outside of eye glints.

I still hate spirals, but I think it might be the last one...
November 9, 2025 at 5:33 PM
This is the start of a run of 6 pure water Pokémon in a row. And, in my opinion, represents the last of the "mundane" Pokémon before we get into the stretch of 30 or so (mostly) "unique" endgame Pokémon.

Grab your Super Rods.

And I still hate spirals.
November 9, 2025 at 4:35 AM
At four total hours, Kangaskhan is the Pokémon that has taken me me the longest. I'm not really sure why. I was a little distracted but not too bad.

They're complex but not an hour more than Rhydon. Maybe I just need to work on being more fluid in my sketching.

Leaving the Safari Zone next.

When I first started this whole thing, I took a glance through the Pokémon, and decided that I was most afraid of Tangela.

That fear was justified. I didn't even bother trying to be super accurate to the reference. Just tried to get it to look good enough. Not perfect, but better than expected.
November 8, 2025 at 2:14 AM
Can I offer you an egg in this trying time?

After Rhyhorn and Rhydon, Chansey was a nice and simple one. I think she might be the last pink puffball in Gen One.

But in other news, the one Pokémon I've been afraid of the most in the entire list is up next. Stacy, give me strength...
November 3, 2025 at 11:46 PM
Two today. My goal is still to try and finish before the end of the year. It'll mostly depend on how busy I am over the holidays. Or if I spend my Sundays drawing two Pokémon while watching football.

Rhydon felt like redemption for Nidoking way back when. Very similar, but I've gotten better!
November 2, 2025 at 10:01 PM
I had a lot of trouble with the sketch for Rhyhorn. There's so many shapes and overlapping plates, to get them to all look good relative to each other meant a lot of trial and error.

But I think I managed to salvage it. I was thinking this would be really bad. Turned out okay.

Shading helps too.
November 2, 2025 at 4:30 PM
Happy Halloween everyone! A moderately spooky Pokémon, I guess?

Weezing is very lumpy. So that made the shading an interesting challenge. Especially on the "stomach" of the larger head. Also, the gas clouds have black outline, where Koffing's had colored lines.

Tough one next.

Matte screen cover part 2.

Felt better about it this time. Doesn't help with sketching, but felt like I was better able to ink over my sketch more precisely. So, that's good?

The gas puffs I felt like I could get better, but maybe I'll see how it goes when I try it again next time.

So, I got a paper-like screen cover for my iPad. I’m not sure if I like it or not yet. Made blending feel great but didn’t help my sketch accuracy.

And it makes the screen less clear and a little tough to use at times.

I’ll give it a chance, since it’s removable. But we’ll see if I keep it.

Got lazy again with the rendering, but for it still took me nearly three hours.

The problem with the human-like Pokémon is that they are definitely in the Uncanny Valley. Those are not human legs. But they are close enough to look wrong.

Also clothing and pleats are hard???
October 25, 2025 at 4:53 PM
Why do fighting type Pokémon need to have muscles? (Sarcasm). Also basically didn't bother rendering.

Most interesting part of Hitmonlee is the fact the two legs have a different number of segments from each other. Weird. But that's how the reference is.

One kick man today. One punch man tomorrow.
October 24, 2025 at 11:31 PM
Not quite as good as Cubone, but still a fun one. Unfortunately Marowak just isn't quite as interesting as the child. Also, maybe the weirdest hand in the entire Pokédex?

Pair of fighters up next.

This one I'm really proud of. For as much as I wasn't "feeling it" for Exeggcute and Exeggutor, I "felt" Cubone the whole way.

The skull has some of the most complex rendering (and most different values) of any Pokémon so far (that I've noticed) in the references.

So here we are. Halloweeny too!
