The Dictators’ Club: How Regional Organizations Sustain Authoritarian Rule (OUP) is out now! 📚

We live in an age of rising authoritarianism. Many assume that regional organizations (ROs) are key to help protect democracy and human rights - but what if they do the opposite?

One core idea of DiscussData was to provide a safe haven for research data from authoritarian countries in the former Soviet Union, where researchers and academic freedom are often under threat. In a worrying development, similar initiatives emerge now in the US: lil.law.harvard.edu/blog/2025/02...

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

The way I see it: a number of us will have to commit more firmly than ever to basic elements of humanity and collective progress.

We have fear based, authoritarian powers ascending, aided and abetted by an information system that has people siloed and disconnected from each other.
