Statement from our client Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah. It is a tragedy that Adelaide Writers' Week has been destroyed, for nothing. However, this is a massive win for artistic freedom and hopefully a turning point in this time of unhinged McCarthyist witch-hunting. Randa is a hero and we love her.

I’m still sad there won’t be a Writers Week this year. But I’m very proud of this moment.

…and yet not a waste, because we have drawn a clear line in the sand. We will not accept racism or censorship. Authors have stood firm and we have won.

We will bear the losses now, but we have shown our strength and made it easier for others to take a stand.

Can writers' festivals survive a 'censorship' crisis?
The shock cancellation of Adelaide Writers' Week has left many concerned about the future of writers' festivals in an increasingly polarised political world.

As someone who has participated in efforts to get the SA premier to understand arts and culture since he was elected, this moment - Malinauskas looking lost in a crisis of his own making - has an eerie inevitability about it

The Adelaide Festival board PR release paraphrased:
We don't understand
-writers
-books
-festivals
-the arts
-audience
-what our job is
-how to resist interference
-the gravity of our mistake
-how to apologise.
So we've obliterated Writers' Week & left the whole Adelaide Festival boardless, byeeee.

A failure of principle led to a failure of courage that led to a failure of governance and has now brought us to a failure of accountability.

Writers - and readers - deserve so much better than this.

Malinauskas should answer for the destruction of Writers Week.

It will also do great damage to the standing of our much-loved Writers Week among authors and audiences. I am, like so many others, bitterly disappointed that cultural workers have been put in this position yet again.

I urge the Adelaide Festival Board to reverse this decision immediately.
January 9, 2026 at 12:18 AM
As Chair of the Australian Society of Authors, I stand for writers’ rights to participate freely in public discourse, to be engaged fairly and to work under fair conditions.

The Board’s decision is one that undermines all those rights.
January 9, 2026 at 12:18 AM
Yesterday I wrote to the Adelaide Festival Board to withdraw my participation from Adelaide Writers Week.

Their decision to intervene in Writers Week programming and cancel the participation of author Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah is completely unacceptable.
