There should be a German word for when a researcher chooses their field of study not because they’re the most talented/best poised for impact in that particular area, but because they are motivated by attaining success and prestige that comes with being associated with the topic.

A highlight of my Korea trip was this tour guide who's heard enough foreigners say, "I wish I could live here," and decided to design a "real talk" tour about the darker, complicated underbelly – e.g. education system, real estate crisis, plastic surgery culture etc. Gotta respect the hater energy 😂
