It's kind of wild that you only had to be 57 years old to be simultaneously an Elizabethan and live through the Restoration of Charles II

Send help #earlymodern #paleography wizards. What is this abbreviation “blu”? Context suggests it to be a color (logically black) but I’m stuck. Grateful for any suggestions!

Hello again (even more) new followers! Lovely to see so many people joining and (I hope) interested in #earlymodern history.

In the spirit of sharing more ideas and what I'm working on, here's a blog post about 'perishables' in the East India Company archives.

That kindness is always going to be appreciated by creators, but if you want to help to boost something here, you have to repost it so others see it. 🙂

Please don't call what RFK Jr. and Jay Bhattacharya are going to do medieval. It's not medieval. It's nothing like the Middle Ages. People in the Middle Ages were happy to try all kinds of things to not die of the plague and if you'd given them antibiotics and vaccines they would have loved it.

Bluesky academics, let’s get to know each other! Quote this & tell me 1) a project you are working on & 2) an idea/theory you aren’t working on but keep thinking about

1) the wardrobe and material legacies of King Charles I
2) changing patterns in female agency over the course of the civil wars

Quote and tell me, because I’m curious to know: what book that you are currently reading would you recommend?

I’ll start: Adam Smyth’s The Book Makers. Such a lively history of mostly fragmentarily known lives of book people.

The people I know panicking most about Trump possibly winning in 2024? Not white liberals.

Immigrants.

Iranian. Chilean. Argentinian.

People who know that governments can turn on a dime, go from a democracy to a dictatorship in a day. They’ve seen this happen before, and they know the signs.
If it seems unimaginable that the US is heading towards and dictatorship, it once seemed unimaginable that Trump would be President, or return after seeking to overturn the 2020 election.
We suffer from a normalcy bias, the sense that it can't happen here.
